The true pirates were of two main groups. Those of the Barbary Coast of Africa. A lot of them were former slaves (white, black, and otherwise). Most were of a diverse group from around the Mediterranean as well as English and Dutch.
Of the Caribbean grouping, you are dealing with escaped slaves, African freemen, English, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italians. There was a smattering of Indians from the main land who were brought up with the Spanish and Portuguese.
