If we were hard-working, or funny, or gentle in our past lives, would we be the same way in our next lives? Do our personalities change from one life to the next?

thrs only 1 life...life after death is either in hell or heaven....

Personality ends when the brain stops functioning.
There is a possibility of "cellular memory" where the cells in the body retain a primitive form of "memory" that carries over into other existences, but it is not "personality," nor is it conscious awareness of a previous life. Other than some vague recollection of past events.
When humans (animals of all kinds) die, they become part of the "food chain" and become the foundation for future generations of plants & animals, including humans. If humans are still around when the body recycles and is consumed by other humans, that is.

I think our personalities do change from one life to another. Everything about ourselves in the physical plane is an illusion which does not apply to our soul.
I do believe we carry things over, such as implicit knowledge. The kind that children have about certain things that they have never been "taught" such as phobias and fears.
Sylvia Browne has a fascinating book which addresses the subject of past lives and how they may affect our present. Good reading!

Our native or basic personalities are effected by our past negative experiences and actions. All these experiences are recorded and can be reactivated by present time environments, people and conditions. When this happens these pictures or recodings can be activated without our control or awarenes and can cause unwanted reactions and emotions which effect our basic personalities. These can cause chonic dramatizations.Life time to life time.
This is an accumulating effect that creates inevitable deterioration of basic personality.
The exact mechanism of this part of our mind has been researched and a technique developed to recover and erase these recordings of these experiences (including past deaths).

"Dianetics the Modern Science of Mental Health"

Your present spirit self is a totality of all your lives to date, and yes, very often fragments of those prelived experiences can be felt in this time...when you notice attractions or dislikes of certain things or people, as well as illnesses that recur, these are examples. we will be new, that mean life and ourselves will be new, for in Revelation, John write that everything will be new.
