this was a drastic thing to do,certain programs such as games sometimes change sound configuration, its happened to me and all you have to do is go to control panel and sound and its either been set on mute or the sound source has changed
a system restore would of fixed your problem,or even easier a driver update in device manager
there is a program called "driver magician"which will back up all your essential drivers and put them in a single folder,so if you have a emergency like this, you can call on them instantly to re-install the driver
you can download this from http://www.drivermagician.com/,and use it for a trial period, better still you can back them up to cd and this way you even have a copy after a dreaded hard drive failure
good luck

You should definitely try Driver Magician (get one of the latest versions though). Link http://bit.ly/1k3HQuD
It's the best software of its kind.
Cheers.

You may have set MUTE in your audio settings. Have a look in Control Panel - AUDIO. It often happens when you have to reinstall.

Cheers
