Yes, I'm working on it now. Just sit on the floor and put your legs like a V in front of you. Move them apart as far as you can... wait until most of the burn goes away and do it further until you can't go any further. When you are done stretching make sure to bring your legs in slowly so they don't go into shock and cramp up. Eventually you will be able to do the splits! Yay! Ohh and my trainer told me if you can to do this after you work out while your muscles are still warm - it works better. Good luck!

Not everyone can, it depends on how elastic your tendons are.
Try walking or jogging around to warm up your muscles before you start stretching, that will make it easier.
Try sitting on the floor with your legs in front of you-stretch your hands toward your feet to stretch the muscles in the back of the legs. Next, spread your legs about 3 feet apart, and walk your hands as far forward as you can. While still in this position, move from the center to one of your extended feet, and slowly pull your toes toward you, stopping when/if it hurts. Move to the other side and repeat.
Keep moving your legs further and further apart, it will get easier as you go along.
The tailor's seat is good for your inner thighs- sit on the ground with your knees pointed outward, with your heels together, and as close to your butt as is comfortable. Now, try to push your knees into the ground without lifting your feet.
You can also try doing a front split, just by extending one leg in front and one behind (do this last, so your muscles will be looser), supporting yourself with one hand on either side of your body. You may not be able to get all the way to the floor, but you can get a sense of how far you can get (and how much you have improved). It may be easier to wear socks on a harder surface (shoes can cause friction), but be sure to support yourself in case you slip.
If you get to the point that you are on the floor in this position, you can (carefully!) try to pivot into the sideways split- just lift your body off of the floor onto your hands and pivot yourself until you are in position.
Be really careful and don't push yourself, though, as you can rip your tendons if you push too hard. If it hurts, stop.

Yes, if you stretch and practice long enough, you will most likely eventually be able to reach the point where you can do the splits.

The amount of muscle mass you have causes you to loose flexabilty so that can come into play as well. Stretching maintains and increases flexability so if you do alot of it thers a good chance that you may be able to some day. Do various stretches of the leg muscles to assist in reaching that goal.

The best advice I got for this was to try to do splits for three to five minutes a day. Per leg. That may sound like overkill, but just do it during the commercial breaks of a random show on tv, and you should have it covered.
Good luck!

It's almost like doing reps. Sit in the splits position for 5 minutes at a time, take 2 minutes to relax, and repeat - as much as you seem fit.

Why don't you just dislocate your hips? Then, when the doctor is setting it, put in a special request for a full split.

Turn the other cheek my friend. Leave It to God, God is the great Equalizer, he will take all that's wrong with the world off your shoulders, if you just release your burden to him.
