No, while most actors use B/W because it's traditional. Due to TV and movies a lot of actors are moving towards color.
Here's what I got:
BW Smiling: Comedic Theatatrical
BW No Smile: Dramatic Theatrical
Color Smile: Comedic TV/Movies
Color No Smile: Dramatic TV/Movies
It's up to you. If you want a headshot that you can use all the time I would go with a B/W No smile. Essentially you do want your picture to reflect who you are.

No, they're not as times are changing.
They used to be a trend because TV and movies used to be in B and W. It became mainstay because they highlighted the best features of your face and allowed casting to see what you looked like in b and w.
These days with colour is isn't so important but when you get a decent photographer with decent lighting and know-how the pictures are classier and look more professional. They just make you look good and that's what you want. The low lights and highlights can be manipulated to hide imperfections.
You need to get a range of photos (in black and white and colour) anyway so you can choose the most appropriate to go in for the role you're hoping for. Just remember the photos are for work and are not happy snap friend and family photos.
Get them done by a professional (or would-be prof for cheap) and you can expect to pay anywhere between US$150-400 or £75-250 for a shoot. They will give you 2-7 photos inclusive and charge you extra for more photos.
My advice is to make sure they destroy the film or allow you to take them with you when you collect your prints or in the least sign their name to avoid them selling unauthorized prints of you. If it's studio policy that they will not sell your pictures on then you can sue if they do.
Question now is - glossy or matt? :-)

It used to be a rule that actors' headshots had to be in black and white. Because performers are increasingly posting pictures online and sending them in e-mails, color has become a trend in recent years. I know people who have both. I have color, it's the future.

More and more are starting to come into casting agencies in color. The key is really getting a great photographer, and DO NOT LET THEM style you so you actually don't look like you. You will annoy the casting agents (and make an enemy for life!)

In Los Angeles, they mostly are color now. (I don't know about New York.)
Commercial Agents and Casting Directors definately want color headshots.
I think Black & White is only used for live theatre now.

depends on the face, some faces capture better in b&W, whilst some need colour.
Ask the photographer what he/ she thinks
