My dog has had three sets of shots, waiting two weeks between each set. The vet said we can't take her outside even for a walk until she gets her rabies shot. This is to prevent her from coming in contact with any diseases or anything until she builds up her immunity. It just seems longer than I remember with my other dogs. She really wants to go outside. How long did you wait with your dog?

My dog and I walked home from the vet's office. I never heard of having to wait, but you know, it couldn't hurt. Is there an epidemic of rabies or some other deadly dog disease going on in your area? Has your dog had a history of illness? This could explain your vet's attitude. Where does the dog do her business? Do you have her box-trained or something? I know it must be a royal pain in the butt to keep her house -bound so long, but you've made it this far. Like the other person said, play with her and keep her distracted as much as possible.

PLEASE listen to your vet. I work for an Emergency Vet Hospital. We see so many cases of parvovirus and distemper each month and it's just insane. This isn't China where people only vaccinate 3% of the animals but geez its the USA where most animals are treated better and live better than people in 3rd world countries, yet people still don't get some of the vaccinations complete and end up angry and upset at the vet clinic when they have to spend hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars on treatment when they could have just easily avoided the whole problem by following through on vaccines.

Wait as your vet has said. I've seen 17 cases this month of parvovirus and we're only on 8/4/06 so far. Most of the people thought it was ok to take their pet out to public places after the first 1 or 2 shots. WRONG. Your pet does not develop full immunity until they've had the entire series of shots. Rabies is an important one too. Once a pet gets rabies there is no cure...just death ok....so follow your Vet's advice.

Parvovirus is the top killer of puppies that I've seen so far this year. Occasionally we get poisonings and electrocutions from pups eating fertilizers, owner's drugs, plants, chewing through electrical cords...but Parvo outnumbers them all hands down.

Parvovirus is shed in the feces of an infected animal. The animal may not yet show signs of being sick. If your pup comes down with parvovirus and your regular vet isn't open...if you go to the emergency clinic you're looking at a bill of AT LEAST $500 to start. That amount can skyrocket past $3,000 in one weekend depending on how sick the puppy gets. Waiting and following your vet's advice is better than crying your eyes out when your pup gets sick or even in worst cases, watching them die in front of you from dehydration which can sometimes take pups in as little as 24 hours.

If you don't believe me, go call your local emergency vet clinic and ask them their average treatment prices on a case of full blown parvovirus on a pup. Then ask the best way to keep your pup from getting parvo...they'll tell you to make sure vaccines are complete and that the puppy is at least 4 to 6 months old.

Assuming you are in the U.S. (?), your dog is fine to go outside. Don't let her run freely off-leash, but definitely take her on walks and get her around other dogs that have had their shots. Unless you are in an area with a big rabies problem, I wouldn't worry about it at all. Early socialization is the most important thing---more dogs die because of behavior problems due to poor socialization than do from rabies.

The vets attitude is a bit paranoid. I got a puppy earlier this year and took him out for walk before all his shots were finished. Just supervise the dog and don't let him into areas with many other dogs (ex. dog parks).

After her 3rd set of shots vet said it was fine. She got the rabies shot with her fourth set. I think it would depend more on where you live and the potential threat of rabies. Where I live they have to have their rabies shot before they can be tagged (licensed) and you have to have their license by law.

I think its ok to walk your pup now. As long as it has all its Parvo shots.. which is the shots you did every 2 weeks.
But i'm not sure, i'm no vet.
