Montezuma's Revenge (var. Moctezuma's Revenge) refers to the conquering of the Aztecs by European invaders led by Hernán Cortés (1485-1547). Moctezuma II (1466-1520), the emperor of Aztecs at the time, was killed by his own people, in revolt against the Spanish invaders, so that anything bad that happens in Mexico to descendants from the invaders, or any non-Mexican, for that matter, could be interpreted as a posthumous "revenge" of the emperor against his enemies.
Originally, it is a colloquial American English name for traveler's diarrhea caused by a bacterium strain present in food and water, to which Mexicans are normally immune, but that causes disease in foreigners.

By the way, did you know his name is Moctezuma? That's his Aztec name. Somehow, American history books all write "Monte," so I don't blame you. Even the Marines' song says, "From the halls of Montezuma...," but that's wrong. Check out all the Spanish sites from México; they say Moctezuma.
I have a theory. When the Spaniards came, they might have "Spaniardized" his name by confusing "Moc-te" with "monte," which means "mount" in Spanish (as in Mount Olypus). Maybe the Americans took that corruption of the name from there. Just a hunch. I'd like to take a look at some of Spain's history books to see how they spell it there. If they spell it Moctezuma, it means the name got corrupted in the US, not by the Spaniards.

Aztec or Maya king...the Spanish pretty much wiped out them and their culture. The joke is that this is a means for the ancient king (and his peoples) to somehow avenge themselves...even if it is in a small and rather gross way...

The spanish explorers invaded his land, gave his people smallpox, and stole his gold. I think I'd be a little p.o.'d too!

Turn the other cheek my friend. Leave It God, God is the great Equalizer, he will take all that's wrong with the world off your shoulders, if you just release your burden to him.

Well, first of all the Conquistador's killed him, I imagine that would make anyone kind of mad. Then they sacked his city, enslaved his people and stole his land.
Fairly reasonable response really.
