don't worry about it too much, it's really okay to watch cartoons and play with action figures with 2 year olds when you are 12 there is really nothing wrong with it, the talking to himself might be something to worry about, so you might want to talk to your Dr. about that, but the cartoons and the playing with siblings is great it just means that you are a great parent and that he is not afraid of being him self he is not ashamed and that is a quality that most people lack now days.
one thing that might help would be to have him go places where he can interact with people his age, school is not enough, martial arts can be a great way to do that maybe swimming lessons it will help him to grow out of the action figure stage and move on to doing sport and other activities that will help him develop a more mature personality, I know it might sound a little cheesy but I've seen worse get better.
I am a martial arts instructor and I've had all kinds of student all ages and all different maturity levels, once I had a 10 year old who really thought that he could fly and that he was invincible and that he could shoot me with a red laser I would have to chase him around because he thought that he was going to fly home with big orange wigs, I had to carry him back to class for about a month or so and at times he would kick me and bite me but in just a few months he was acting more his age and was one of the my best student, I was amazed, that was just one case I could go for ever telling you all the different stories, I've also had students that are home schooled and some of them don’t socialize very much so the don’t act their age, they would talk to them selves and play with action figures and all kinds of things like that I seriously thought that there was no way those kids would every be normal, it only took about 5 months for them to act more their age.
I'm not saying that martial arts will do the trick for your kid but it is worth a try, it doesn't have to be martial arts it can be swimming, football anything like that.
good luck

First off I just want to say that is great that your child is able to still act like a child. There are so many children these days that grow up so fast, that I think it is really sad. A Question though, Are there not other children around so he does not have to pretend by himself? Is he a shy child? I would recommended taking him to the park and see how he interacts with other children. He may just not know how to socialise. But if you still have concerns take him to the doctors for a check up.
Good Luck!

I don't know that I would talk to anyone about it yet. You said he does fine in school. He is just at a funny age--between a child and a teen ager. Some kids mature faster than others. It sounds like he has a great imagination, and you haven't let him get addicted to video games (good for you!) At his next physical or sick visit, mention it to his pediatrician. Also, try to encourage friendships with other children his age by allowing him to invite a good friend over fairly often.

He is a normal 12 year old boy. Don't worry. I have a son who is 13. 12 is an age where they seem to teeter on wanting to grow up and wanting to still be a little boy. Be glad he is not growing up too fast!

You might want to have him checked by a family physician who will probably have you get him tested for IQ. Good luck.....you also didn't say how does he do in school is he on grade level or is he behind, they can test him there as well.

He may have a mild form of autisim. My brother was just like your son and he was diagnosed with autism. Have him tested right away because you dont want it to go undiagnosed.

I think you should talk to your doctor. That sound like a commercial, but it's the right thing!

Hasn't anybody else noticed this? He goes to school, right? Maybe you should take your concern there.
