You could try an init string that could help the modem compensate for a noisy phone line. However if you have a 56 k modem and aren't connecting above 33.6 then you may have to pay the phone company to come up and do a noise test on your line. If you are connecting anywhere between 44 -49 kbps then try a free program called cyber tweak which will adjust the Maximum Transmission Units setting in the Windows registry. By default the MTU setting is set more for a Local Area Network connection. By adjusting this setting your bandwidth as limited as it is, is used more efficiently.

compression software might help. Try microsoft.com, zdnet.com or the modem vendor for a driver for your modem that offers this capability.

Speed depends from your phone connection. If modem has 56Kbps it can't go faster.

Can't do it. Your speed is limited either by the modem (56k) or by the phone company's equipment depending on your location.
