We recently acquired a one year old miniature dachshund from a family who kept her in an airline crate most of her life. Because of her isolation, she has some major issues when it comes to people. I believe wholeheartedly in crate training. This was not just a crate training situation. She was let out of her crate very little and not socialized AT ALL, which has brought out some major aggression problems with strangers.
She is making progess slowly, and enjoying her new life with her two German Shepherd brothers. Her days are spent playing in the back yard chasing butterflies and terrorizing chipmunks. She finally knows what toys are, and she loves to be cuddled. She has her own doxie bed with a huge quilt that she burrows under.
Physically, she wasn't beaten, but mentally it really did a number on her. We will seek professional help with her if needed. She has a forever home with us, so we won't give up on her.
What are your experiences with your rescued pets?

My doberman was throw out of a car and then they hit him with the car and drove off and left him.
He was picked up and taken to a vet who kept him for about a week and could find nothing major wrong. He was then put into rescue. I got him as a foster for the rescue he was 12 weeks old and about 30 pounds. huge dog no manners and no training.
He earned his CGC tiltle from AKC and did some work as a therapy dog.
I lost him a couple of months ago to cancer. He was only 5 years old.

My doggie is also a rescue pet from a family that isolated him. He didn't know what dog food or dog toys were at all. He had no training and did whatever he pleased. We were recommended to crate train him right away and it was a disaster!
However it's been 6 months now and after many hours of training and a great dog training course (not a pet store one), Chip has no problem going into the crate anymore. He's so well-behaved and mellow now. Good luck with your pet. ^_^

i rescued a little italian greyhound in december 2005. the poor thing started her life just like your doxie did....shut up in a crate. no toys, no friends, no loving. when i got to her, she shook like a leaf from morning to night. she never made a peep. i'd take her out to potty and she'd just cower at my feet. sometimes she'd sit and pee right where she was sitting because she was so afraid to move. she would pee and poo in her crate i guess because she was so used to doing it before. she had NO idea what to do with toys. usually even the sound of the a/c kicking on would send her into a fright and she'd burrow under the sofa or closet or wherever she could get. she wasn't physically abused to my knowledge but she is a product of poor breeding in a puppy mill. she has osteopetrosis and actually broke her leg in february 2006! she has legg perthes disease as well which leaves her with minimal function of her right hind hip.
it's been about 8 months now since i got her and she is doing better. we bonded a lot when she was healing from her injury. she is still petrified of strangers and isn't good about responding to the command 'come'. we are at least able to take walks on a leash and play with toys now. she has learned to bark recently which is hilarious because she even scares herself! she's gained 1.5# which is a big deal for an italian. she is spoiled rotten and it is so fulfilling for me to have such a wonderful companion (even with all her nueroses!) i'd rescue a hundred more if my boyfriend would let me! i am so glad i rescued and didn't buy. even with the vet bills we wound up with, i still feel like she knows she's in loving hands now.
i'm so happy that you have also reached out to a rescue baby! i wish you luck!!

I have 2 females that were breeder pugs kept in poor conditions. One was turned over to rescue with a cracked jaw and a prolapsed uterus. The other was dumped at the pound with enormous hernias. Both were seen to by the vet and are now doing great.
I have 2 males from rescue, too. No big stories for them. Just lame owners.
My mom has a golden retriever with a bullet in her hip.
My one female took a little while to come out of her shell. She was very traumatized. They all are crazy with food. I just love them, though. Whenever you rescue animals, you're their hero.

tlctreecare! That is a horrable story! Hope she is doing fine now! :)
My dog was rescued from a puppymill where she was shocked. She can't be on a harnedd or coller now because she shakes in fear whenever she sees one. She was also in a cage for most of her life. When we first got her, her back legs didn't work too good from being ing the cage. SHE WAS AFRAID OF GRASS!!
SHe is terrified of everone but me, my mother and my friend. She loves being outside now. We have had her 1 year. She is getting a little better.
Good luck and I Hoped I helped some!

ALL MY PETS THAT I HAVE OVER THE YEARS HAVE BEEN RESCUED. OUR MOST RECENT ONE WAS OUR ROTTIE...LADY. I WAS DRIVING AND GOT LOST AND MADE A U TURN. WHILE MAKING THE TURN, I SEEN HER PINNED IN THE CORNER OF A FENCE WITH SOME KIDS POKING HER AND BEING MEAN TO HER WITH STICKS. I FOUND THE OWNER AND SHE SAID THAT SHE DIDN'T WANT HER ANYMORE AND SHE DIDN'T CARE WHAT HAPPEND TO HER. SO I PUT HER IN MY CAR AND SHE'S BEEN LIVING WITH ME FOR SIX YEARS NOW. THE DOC SAID THAT SHE WAS BOUT 6 YEARS WHEN I GOT HER SO SHE'S ABOUT 12 NOW. EMOTIONALLY YEAH IT TOOK HER SOME GETTING USE TOO. SEEMS LIKE SHE WASN'T USE TO BEING LOVED ON AND TAKEN CARE OF IN THE PROPER WAY. ANYWAYS....JUST GIVE YOUR DOG SOME TIME AND SHE WILL SEE THAT SHE'S IN A BETTER PLACE AND COME ROUND TO WHERE SHE WILL FEEL MORE COMFORATBLE ROUND OTHER PEOPLE. JUST CONTINUE TO SHOW HER SOME AFFECTION TO LET HER KNOW THAT YOUR LOVING HER AND NOT HURTING HER.

It sounds to me like you're doing the right thing for this dog. You gave her a loving home, room to play, love and attention, and even puppy companionship. I'm sure she'll slowly learn to trust others with your help.
I adopted a Chow Chow with a history of abuse from the Humane Society. She was terrified of men when I first brought her home. She trusted me right away but barked and growled at my brother and Dad. My Dad would come to visit her periodically. He gave her treats from a distance and taalked to her in a calm voice. It wasn't long before she stopped barking and growling at men. She seemed to realize that not all men are mean and abusive. She's now 4 years old, very playful (and hyperactive), and very loving.

He grew to become into possibly bored which convey approximately the destruction, however the attacking different canines shouldn't get extra useful. At 9 months his habit is enormously plenty set. I recommend euthanizing him, as there is not any way you could stay away from him from being around different canines, and what could ensue if a proprietor tried to interrupt up the combat? somebody must be heavily harm. and don't blame your self - it appears that evidently that to procure him approximately below 2 weeks returned, meaning it is not your fault approximately how he's. His habit grew to become into already there.
