I've learned the best thing to do is find a song or poem that you can sing/recite while teaching them to tie their shoes. My daughter is 2 years old and as long as I can sing to her about something...she picks it up really fast and even learns to sing it herself. Even if you can't find a song, make one up. Be happy while singing. If you can stay calm and learn to read your child's signal for when they are completely frustrated and need to take a break...it'll be a pleasant experience! A good way to introduce the song(s)/poem(s) to your child is to do it yourself while tying your own shoes. Most toddlers/preschoolers love to imitate their parents! Try some of these websites...and GOOD LUCK! Remember to keep smiling!

There are kids books with laces in them you can get that tells the story of tying. There are little wooden shoes with big laces you can get or you can give him an old shoe , you get a shoe and slowly keep demonstrating how to do it while he copies each step until he is proficient in it.

I took a peice of strong cardboard, made holes in the same way a shoe does then I bought bright fun laces and laced it. I then let my daughter practice. She learned quite quickly she is 4 years old and ties her shoes like a pro.

Work in steps. First, have your child help you with the first step of tying their shoe (make a triangle with the laces and tuck one of the laces into the triangle) until he or she can confidently do that. Then, you will be able to work on the next step (make two loops, and hide one loop under the other).

I taught my child with the "bunny ear" method. You take and make an X loop one under, and pull down, then you make two bunny ears and repeat with an X of the bunny ears, and loop under and pull down. Worked great for my daughter, most of the time I did it for her showing her slowly, then one day, we took the time, and sat on the couch, and she did it herself. She did it wonderfully, and she's been tying her shoes since she was 2 (almost 3).
