Because it is easier than taking it on and off and, sometimes, there is no place to set it down safely.
By the way. I can think of numerous things that look more retarded than that.
Why don't you check back in a couple of years.

I keeep mine in sometimes because I am driving, so I just leave it in to make it easier if I get a phone call. And then sometimes I just forget its there, because it is light and has no wire (this never happened before I upgraded to bluetooth.) Don't be so judgemental of people!
Oh yeah, and I don't know many retarded people who use cell phones.

Ha ha ha. I'm really laughing because I have thought the same thing so many times. I don't know why they do that. It's not attractive or cool. I don't think they are retarded just challenged.

My best friend has predicted that one day we will have tiny computer screens that are holograms in the air right in front of our eyes--controlled by a processor planted in our brains, and moused by a TrackPoint installed in the roofs of our mouths...so we'll all be sitting around on benches staring 1 inch in front of our faces and moving our tongues around to scroll and type.
This is a roundabout way of answering your question, the answer to which is: Because people like to feel all electronically and digitally connected to the world when they are in fact entirely isolated from the living bodies (i.e., the people) directly to their left and to their right.
Being ear-budded gives the illusion that the person is connected and is therefore SOMEBODY. It's ridiculous and sad, but such is the way of the world.

so when they get a phone call they don't have to put it in. I don't think it is as retarded as someone driving down the road talking on a cell phone and not paying attention to the road. If you think it looks retartd then don't look.

Most I have seen wearing them while driving which makes sense incase you get a call... I would rather someone be talking hands free then driving one handed... tho sometimes they are still shi tty drivers but anyway.. if they were just walking around with one in then ya I would guess they just want to look important.. someone might want to share with them they just look like they are trying to hard!

I don't know why they do it.
Yes, they look retarded.
Some of them may in fact be developmentally disabled and in those cases I understand completely. For the other 99% of people that do it, they need to get a life and stop posing.

So I can snicker at them for looking dorky behind their back. I work in an office building downtown Atlanta. I snicker often, expecially at the 'Telephony guy' at my company.
What a dork! It's best to when they 'flash' that blue light. I just love it!

Because they wrongly believe it makes them look really cool!
I don't think they have a clue. Why would you intentionally, for everyone to see, go out into public wearing a leash? (In my biased view, all these electronic things people are hanging from their belts, ears, glasses, etc., are just electronic dog leashes).
I try not to laugh at them; and I suspect when they see me grinning and trying to look away, they're thinking, "Yeah, I'm COOL. That's right..."
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaa ha ha ha !
