the jetta is great but if it has over 200,000kms get the timeing belt changed. this a hard questiond to answer because i dont know how much your parents want to spend. another good choice is the ford escrot 1991-1999, great car that is not really a ford but a maxda protege, the fords sell cheaper because they are domestic, also any hondas from 1989 onwards especially the honda civic si or dx witha 5spd.

virtually anything made by Toyota. Any year. I hate to admit it but Toyota is the best built car/truck sold in the U.S. Not just my opinion either, almost all rating services rate Toyota #1.

Case in point. I have a '95 pickup 260k mi. Other than oil change and routine maintenance, total cost for repairs <$100. Toyota will make good any part that is defective. I blew a head gasket and Toyota owned up and said they did have a batch of defective head gaskets. So they replaced the gasket, had the heads trued and valves adjusted, and reassembled the top of the engine. Took a week, they paid for rental car. Total cost to me zip.nada. Oh and BTW the truck had 128K on it at the time. No one in Detroit would even think of doing such a thing if the truck had over 12k on it.

O.K. rant over.

The Chevy Cobalt really caught my eye. I was at a car show with the whole family and my daughter (still way too young to drive) hopped into it with her friends. I was there long enough to see it wasn't just a cool look that attracted young people. That car had the most "Bang-for-the-Buck" out of any car at the show.

I can only think it is being sold at introductory pricing levels from the factory that you got that much for that little. Like the Mini-Cooper from BMW used to be really low priced for the value of what you were getting. Now the Cooper is priced higher than what you are getting.

The Cobalt is built very smartly which makes it exciting and safe at the same time. Its small so easy to park, and light so good on gas.

Good luck to you what ever you pick.

well. they should consider winter driving conditions....is she going somewhere where there is a lot of snow? In that case, awd might be preferable. Otherwise, the Jetta, Mazda 3 or Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan (which is based on the Mazda 6 platform)are all good choices. Make sure that there is a dealership in or near the town she is going to....I am sure your sister does not want to deal with a dealership that is far away if the car needs warranty service.

Ugh. No Jetta!

I'd recommend a Toyota or Honda. Both are long-lasting, have decent re-sale values, and offer huge selection of size, options, price, etc. My issue with a Jetta is simply that I've known three peopel who owned them who weren't happy.

Don't get the smallest car you can find. Keep in mind that this car will need to tote all of her worldy belongings for the next few years!

I have a Dodge Neon. I bought it new 3 years ago and have NEVER had a single problem with it. It is VERY good on gas mileage too. I fill it up every 2 weeks and spend about $25. I drive about 15 miles to and from work each day, plus the regular back and forth shopping and such.
I got a 7 year bumper to bumper warranty too, so that is not a worry if something does happen. Insurance is low too if you get the regular model and not the souped up racing model.
