Im kind of shy so what are some good things to say to start a conversation with him . . i sort of know him because we have some mutual friends and have hung out in a few times with a group but what should i say if i want to approach him more one on one and were at like school not hanging out somewhere??

Well it should be easy for you, as he isn't a complete stranger, and you have friends in common.
Just say Hello, and ask him if he's seen one of your friends around. Once you have started talking, you can ask him, if he has seen, a movie that has just come out. Or some of your favorite music, or some one on American Idol.
He'll ask you a question, and before you know it, you are having a conversation. Just follow his lead.
If he gets quiet, just ask him what his interests are, that should keep it going.

There is really no wrong way to approach a guy. If you can smile and pretend to be interested than I'm interested.
