In Genesis Noah is described as a righteous, just and perfect man (Genesis 6:9 & 7:1) man. Yet he is also seen planting a vineyard, and getting naked and drunk:
"And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard: Noah ... drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent." - Genesis 9:20-21
So according to the Bible, God is totally happy with being drunk, making wine, and being both drunk and naked. In fact the Bible clearly states that that is more than okay. God actually preserved this man to restart the human race after He killed every living thing on the planet.
It should also be noted that Jesus' first miracle was creating wine from water.
So anyone that tells you drinking is a sin, has not read their Bible lately.

In the Bible, it was OK to drink wine. Jesus himself turned water into wine at a party. It would be the equivalent to drinking soda in today's time. It was just one of the things to drink, after all, there weren't many options. There was water, milk, wine and beer. There may have been a few other variations of these drinks, but there weren't too many choices.
It is a sin to get drunk or drink excessively. It says in 1 Corinthians 5:11 "But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat." Drunkard is specifically mentioned.
To drink too much often leads to immoral things, like violence, sex and so on. So, it may not really be the act of drinking too much, but more the affects of becoming drunk.

Based on the Bible, drinking alcohol is of itself not a sin or harmful. Paul told Timothy to drink a little wine to benefit his health.
Of course, the Bible does condemn drunkenness. Titus 1:7 states that a minister of God should not be given to wine or an alcoholic. DRUNKENNESS is clearly a sin (I Timothy 3:8).
The Apostle Paul warns us that we should not be DRUNK with wine, wherein is excess ( Ephesians 5:18).
As long as we drink moderately, the Bible states it is good for us, but drunkenness or alcoholism is definitely a sin and not to be a part of a Christian's life. It's easy to let alcohol get away from you. It can start to control you.

The Book of Proverbs warns against strong drink, which is interpreted to mean hard liquor like vodka, gin, etc.
But as a Christian I sometimes have a glass of wine with dinner or with my wife watching TV and I think it is ok.
My reference is Jesus first miracle - which is by no means an excuse to abuse drinking, because the Bible also says all things in moderation - where he and his mother were at a wedding and the wine was running out (remember, in those days wedding feasts went on for days) and she asked him to do something. He turned water into wine for the guests.
I think this shows he was ok with it ( or wanted to respect his mom!) but I am sure he loved to see people enjoy themselves, as he did time and time again throughout scripture.
And, what did he use for communion at the Last Supper?
My belief is that it is ok, and ok with God when done in moderation and responsibly.
Nice answer from "Joyful" also.
A terrific question.

Proverbs 20:1-- Wine is a ridiculer, intoxicating liquor is boisterous, and everyone going astray by it is not wise.
Ecclesiastes 9:7--Go, eat your food with rejoicing and drink your wine with a good heart, because already the [true] God has found pleasure in your works
Mark 15:22, 23--refering to jesus-They tried to give him wine drugged with myrrh, but he would not take it
1 Corinthians 5:11; 6:9, 10--But now I am writing YOU to quit mixing in company with anyone called a brother that is a fornicator or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man.
This is just a few. It shows us that there is nothing wrong with drinking, but it is wrong to get drunk.

Ephesians tells us not to be drunk with wine but to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Proverbs has much to say about the effects of alcohol.
The Bible doesn't prohibit the drinking of alcohol. It does prohibit getting drunk.
Generally the two rules are:
1) Gotta be 21.
2) In moderation. And i would also ask one to consider why they drink. (Many people drink to deal with their problems, stress, etc.- not the type of thinking that a believer should have- he has Jesus to help him!)
3) Consider those around you. I'm 33 and may have an occassional drink with my dinner, but i never ever drink around those under 21 because it may set a bad example for them, where they think it's ok for them to drink.
God Bless,
Nickster
Also for those who comment on Jesus turning water to wine, the wine they had back then was strongly diluted.

Here are a few for you:
Pro 20:1 Wine is a mocker, fermented drink is stirring, and each one straying by it is not wise.
Pro 23:20 Be not among heavy drinkers of wine, with gluttons, flesh to themselves,
Pro 23:21 for the drunkard and the glutton lose all, and sleepiness shall clothe one with rags.
Eph 5:18 And "do not be drunk with wine," in which is debauchery, but be filled by the Spirit,

The thing is that a lot of peopple misinterpret what wine in the bible means, but in some sections it does mean real wine, Wine was grape juice. /Read 1 Corinthians 6:9-11and Proverbs 23:29-35. Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirt so take care of it.

There are quite a few places in the Bible that talk about wine and drunkeness. It says nothing against wine. However, it says over and over again that drunkeness is wrong. So, if you want to be biblical about it, drink and enjoy, but don't overdo it.
My favorite wine verse is Psalm 104:15, saying that God gave man wine because He cares for us... "He [makes] wine that makes glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face shines, and bread which strengthens man's heart."
If you want more Bible refrences, find an online concordance and search for the words "wine" and "drunkeness."

Jesus turned water to wine, that sounds like an endorsement. He threw the original kegger. Reason being, in the area where the makers of Christianity lived, at that time, the water was not safe to drink. You had to drink alcohol, as it was the only thing that could remain sterile.
