Because Vegetarians cant eat meat, but meat eaters can eat veggie food......DOH!

I've been veggie for years, if I go to a friends home for dinner, I do not expect them to cook something different for me, I will be quite OK to just eat the vegetables/salad etc. Having said that, if a friend does invite me to dinner, meat eaters or not, they have always cooked something veggie for me. I was invited to a BBQ the other evening, and though they were meateaters, two of us were veggie, so they decided to have all the BBQ veggie.

Now, if they came over to my house, they know that I will only cook vegetarian dishes. Having been vegetarian for so long, meat makes me physically sick, there is no-way I would want to handle it. Though I am a nurse and not squeamish in any way, it's the thought of what it is and the morals behind it.

I do not inflict my views on others, and my meat eating friends respect that, but I can not contribute to the meat industry by buying meat products if I have dinner guests.

I'm not a vegetarian, but this is a simple answer. Manners suggest that you check out the dietary restrictions of your guest and adjust accordingly. That is, if there is something they can not eat - because they're allergic, because they hate it, whatever - it's polite not to serve them that. Besides, they won't eat it, so it's a waste. On the other hand, I don't know any meat eaters who flat out can't eat veggies. It's no problem for a meat lover such as myself to also enjoy a meal free of meat, so manners don't require that I be served meat.

I agree with the first answerer.

In addition, the hostess serves whatever she wants to serve. When you make an invitation, it's usually nice to see if your guests have any dietary restrictions or preferences, but you still have the decision about what to serve. A vegetarian hostess will probably serve food that everyone will want to eat, including herself. After all, wouldn't it seem weird if someone invited you for dinner and then they didn't eat the food?

Some vegetarians don't feel good about serving meat, and if there isn't any vegetarian food at a meal, what are they supposed to eat?

Very good question - thought I had the best answer but I read others first and there are some good points - actually a lot of good points. I have to go with - you CAN eat veggies and the CANNOT eat meat.

And come on lets face it Vegetarians are not like mean hateful people, they are generally pretty nice.

As a vegetarian myself, I have to say that it is hard to cook meat. I would love to make my guests feel at home but if I were to cook meat it would be hard not to try it to check if it has enough salt or if tastes good while I'm cooking. Additionally, it is hard to handle a piece of a dead body if you decide to be a vegetarian just not to do this, you know...

Not all of them! My boss is vegetarian and she serves organic meat at her parties although she doesn't eat any of that (and doesn't test them while cooking, so they're kind of bland). I guess nonvegetarians won't be sick if they skip meat for a meal. But vegetarians will starve if they have nothing but meat to choose from when they dine.

If I have guests then they are my friends. Why would I feed the putrid rotting flesh of a dead diseased animal pumped full of harmones to my friends.
I get unsprayed, unpreserved and healthy food for them the best available. I have a big garden and we grow a lot of our food organically. Serving veggi stew and salads and corn on the cob.
homade breads and muffins and rolls. Bowls of fresh fruit salads
Never heard any complaints.

good question, but don't see good answer. it should be about compromise and company. but i must say that i have a veggie friend that does serve chicken to her carnivorous friends. For all those who continually say that meat eaters can make a meal off of veggies...NOT ME. Must be meat in some form or fashion. I can go without it's my choice not to. I am always respectful when our friend will be eating with us to pick somewhere that she can have plenty of options. I respect her so why should I always be the one to compromise (according the poplular answer anyway)? (but i don't have to with our friend)

No I would not expect veggie food - it would be nice ofcourse but I would be happy just to have whatever the host/hostess is making minus the meat.. (if possible)

And much as I hate the texture/sight etc of meat - I do cook it for my family - such as for Christmas.. don't think it fair to impose my beliefs on them..
