You sound as though you just invented the wheel. The fact is, that is the way it used to be. It certainly was that way from 1942 until 1975, however back then it was called a draft. Maybe that's something you have never heard before, but that's the way it was, back then.
If you were a college student and keeping up your grades, you got a deferment, however your GPA fell below a certain point or you dropped out of school, the draft board nabbed you for active duty.
Your second idea regarding education, is something that is done in the US, and has been done for many years, it's called the GI Bill.

I'm starting to think I'm talking with someone who is living outside the continental United States. I say this because most of this is common knowledge, and it is hard to understand how an adult, living in the US, is not aware of this information.

No offense to you Americans but you know how military people
are very able 60% percent of Americans are overweight and
that would most definetly ruin the qualtiy of the American military
and death tolls would be higher then ever and serving in
the military would mean survival of the fittest and the U.S
lacks the fittest ( unless you count the men already serving).
The military of the U.S has great reliance of technology and it
is probably the only thing keeping the American military
alive. So in awnser that would not be a good idea although
it would definetly keep Bin Laden motivated and happy!!

No, imagine the problems the military would have if they took people that didn't want to be there. The military has a high degree of professionalism contrary to media reports. It would be worse than our public schools. We would need a lot more military prisons. Ha Ha

However some type of compulsory government or civil service wouldn't be a bad idea.

Can you imagine all the bitching in Basic Training then. We would have to have Focus Groups, polls, personal trainers, cable TV, MTV, personal assistants, and massage therapist just to make it through.

I think the military instills self-discipline along with tonnes of other skills that todays youth could benefit from, but having all citizens serve in the military to better serve the nation is a horrible idea. Not everyone wants or needs to better themselves by serving in the military. There are tonnes of ways to instill good qualities in people.

Forcing people to fight for their freedom is quite a paradox. I don't know where I stand on that issue, but I don't think it is neccessary just yet.

I wanted to join the military when I graduated high school, but I wanted to go to college more. I chose college because I knew that if I went into the military I'd never go to college.

On the other hand, I have my degree now and nothing is stopping me from enlisting. But I would have a hard time doing so unless I thought that it was a good cause. IMO, Iraq is not a good cause.

I will agree with that the second the US Government stops being a bully and stops causing wars all over the god damn place!
Why give them our kids so they can send them out into a foreign country to fight for oil?

I honestly believe it would be great for today's youth, since they are all lazy, undisciplined, slackers, but right now the government is too aggressive and would end up destroying a whole generation. That would weaken our nation in the long run.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Too many American think it is a one way street. All for them. Give nothing back and especially to the government. Remember John Kennedy's words: "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country". Not many people remember these words or don't care to remember them.

I served two years during Viet Nam. It was one of the best experiences of my life. Others need to learn to give rather than just always taking.

that is not a good idea or necessary . the draft will happen if it needs to but there are plenty of people in the military that love what they do that signed up themselves . it is just like any job if you are not passionate you won't be good and not being good in the military is dangerous . and to say you aren't an american if you don't serve in the military is ignorance at its best

If it is a fixed and definite period of obligation that everybody reaching that age would have to serve as a condition of not going to jail, and there is adequate provision made not only for the able and literate but also for the disabled, chronically ill, drug addicts, intellectually challenged, juvenile delinquents, and those who don't happen to speak the local language, it could be made to work. Ideally it could become a prerequisite to one's being styled Mr. _______ or Ms. _________ .

Absolutely NOT!

First off, we're not Israel or Musad. We have a completely volutary military force.

Secondly: This WAR IS ILLEGAL!! We shouldn't be shipping any of our children off to serve at this point!! Why parents allow it is insanity!!

Thirdly: My own son is of the age where he must register with the Selective Services...I will NOT LOOSE MY SON TO AN ILLEGAL WAR!!

Oh, and for that moron who says if you're not willing to fight you're Un-American...THAT STATEMENT IS UN-AMERICAN!

Or have you forgotten what it means to have RIGHTS in this country!
I served, but it was my CHOICE to do so!
I will NOT force my own child to do the same!!!
I served so my flesh and blood wouldn't have to!
His father serves still so NONE of his sons ever have to!!!!
