Never apologize via e-mail ! An e-mail is a totally inappropriate and insincere way of righting a wrong. You should apologize to her in person, this also gives you the chance to explain how you came to make such a mistake.

Don't send an email. Just go up to her and apologize. If she won't accept then that is her fault.
Is she a nasty type that will try and get you fired? I'd also go down to h.r. and find out what you can do to counter act this.

Sometimes words can cut deeper than any sword and expose what is really inside the person.
You can offer an apology - no excuses - is she accepts fine if not, you did what was correct.

Speak from the heart. If your sentence attacked her personally, apologize that you said something you truly didn't mean to say OR believe. Either way she will still respect your passion.
I hope this helps.

Having soiled your pants in front of a group, the only true way to apologise is to do so in front of as many of the group as you can get together. Having done so, you can then contact the young lady, apologise to her and inform her of your actions.............

What has been said cannot be taken back, you can only apologize by saying you didn't mean what you said.......
