When I go downstairs, I always find shoes and other things scattered all around the living room. It's tearing my things when I'm not around.

He must have some kind of separation anxiety disorder when you leave the house. Check with your vet and get a trainer or behavior specialist. Leave toys for him to chew on, give him a treat before you leave the house and hide your shoes! It takes a while get rid of separation anxiety but he will be fine, given the right training. You can even do it yourself......leave the house for ten or fifteen minutes and come back, longer and longer each time. Make your leaving a positive experience for him so he will not get so anxious. Take him on a long (maybe one hour) walk....exercise tires them out, either before you leave the house or after, and if he likes walking he will associate the coming home with a walk. Check out the Dog Whisperer website, Cesar Millan has great tips for this behavior. Just don't scold him or hit him, it does not cure this problem.

First of all, get Granny's Bitter Apple Spray, available at pet stores. It doesn't stain clothes, but be careful because it may ruin wooden surfaces. Spray your shoes along with the other items he chews with the spray and it will taste disgusting for the dog.

Next, buy him bones or toys that are difficult to chew up right away (not soft, easy-to-chew squeaky toys). Spending more time with your dog (walks, playing with, etc.) also might prevent his desire to chew everything up.

Good luck!

Get him chew toys. Never beat him or yell him when he destroys things, because that will teach him to be aggressive and play rough. Instead, pull him away from whatever he's destroying and give him his chew toy. Hopefully, in time, he'll learn his lesson.

Crate, crate crate! Ppl think that crates are cruel, but they are not. Dogs are den animals, they don't mind the crate. What happens if he starts chocking on something he's chewed up and you are not home?
