You only say "ow" if it doesn't really hurt. Like a paper cut or a bruise. Otherwise, you swear or yell or gasp or hold your breath and try not to swear.

Maybe we're just used to hearing it because our parents or whoever was around us when we were very small couldn't swear in front of us, leaving them with only one option "OW".

I think we learn it from our parents. They gave us something else to say beside just cry.
