EVERY State has it's ups and downs! To raise a family, I'd say Oregon, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Road Island, Parts of Florida, Parts of California, basically anywhere that has a suburb. For a student, I'd say, Florida, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Pheonix, Atlanta... Hopwe this helps.

One where you have friends or relatives to help your through the hard times. I have lived and several and visited many more. They all have things that are good and bad. NJ is nice that you dont have to fill your own gas tank, in fact you are not allowed to. But you do get that refinery smell sometimes and there are tanks of oil all over the place, but lovely rural areas too. California has great weather pretty much everywhere, but the cost of living and prices of houses is way out of most peoples league.
So there are all kinds of things to consider

California. I have lived in 3 states: Colorado, Idaho and California and have been to most of the others. In California, there are the best beaches and some of the best skiing/snowboarding in the country. Also, we have some of the best cities in the country: San Francisco, San Diego, L.A. and of course, SAN JOSE.
