Im 17 years old and I've been cutting & doing other forms of self injury since I was 13 and I don't know how to stop. It's becoming very dangerous for me because I always seem to cut too deep. Only a few nights ago I almost bleed to death. I don't want my parents to find out cause it would freak them out too much, but all my friends who know want to tell them... I'm not sure how to go about getting the help I need. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could stop, or reduce the amount I cut?
thx,
PT

Seek professional help. Start by talking with your counselor at school.

Your parents love you, they would rather find out about your problem before it's too late.

Well, I do think that you should at least talk to an adult figure in your life (fav. teacher or the school counselor) and they might be able to refer you to some sort of free professional help somewhere because this is a serious issue that you have. You probably need to get a tetanus shot to be sure you're ok healthwise.

Maybe try wearing more clothing that covers you up more so that when you get the urge to do it, the cut won't be as bad as having nothing covering your skin. Get rid of any and all sharp objects in your room or close vicinity that you are in close proximtiy of every day.

You're just going to have to be very strong-willed not to do it. When you feel like cutting yourself do something positive instead: talk a long walk or jog, or go to a public place where people could see you if you did cut yourself and this might stop you from doing it, because of course you wouldn't want people to see.

Talk to your friends and tell them that you are taking steps to getting some help in taking care of the situation yourself and you would appreciate it if they would not tell your parents, even though it sounds like they do care about you a lot. Just ask them for their support while you try to resolve this. If none of these remedies help you, then PLEASE get some profresional help!! Good Luck!

Get some therapy. It really does work! I used to be a cutter for many, many years, till I once cut too deep. That was the wake-up call I needed to get some help. You have to find out what the underlying reason is that makes you need to do this. Find that reason then you can find your solution.

Good luck and take care.....

My friend from school had the same problem. Dont keep sharp things around. Everything you feel like cutting you need to think about a good thing in your life. That helped him. Good luck. If it gets too bad you do need to talk to your doctor and parents though.

I am so sorry. This is a terrible thing that often gets shoved under the rug. My aunt was a cutter for years. There is no easy solution with this illness and yes it is an illness. You need to talk to your parents or someone else that you can trust. This illness hardly ever goes away on its own so get help. here are a few websites to visit http://www.kidshealth.org/teen/your_mind/mental_health/cutting.html

Please get help immediatly. The only way to fix this problem is to ask for help. If your willing to stop you should tell your parents, they can really get you the help you need. Always remember there is hope and that your not alone, theres millions of people that do the same thing. The best thing I could think for you to do is come clean, and just ask for help, and i could bet you 1 million dollars that people will not think twice about helping you if they love you.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Get some professional help, you obviously are suffering some severe emotional depression and this is your way of trying to deal with the pain. But you need help understanding where these feelings are coming from and that there are other ways to deal with them. If you feel your parents are in large part the cause of these feelings then talk to a clergyman, your doctor or some other trusted adult that you may have and let them know your situation, help is around the corner, your drowning but your not calling for anyone to throw you a life line.

you should get some professional help before something serious happens to you, you don't want nothing bad happening to to you right? life is to short enjoy it while your still here! why do you do it in the first place? whatever problem you have try talking it out with someone, like a parent or a friend or someone else, someone will listen and help you out. best of luck to you and try to smile and stay positive

if it's as serious as you say it is, and if you'vewbeen doing it for as long as you say you have, it sounds like you might need to see someone- a professional- to help you out. it won't go away over night.

considering your age, you might not be able to do it without telling your parents. if you trust them with the information, tell them and find someone you would feel confortable talking to.

in the interim, try and throw away everything you cut with, whatever it is. when you feel the urge, call someone you trust and talk it through.

wish you well.

You should tell your parents. You could end up really hurting yourself of dying. Its not worth it. In the meantime here are a few website with support information:
