The additional stipulation not given in the riddle as posted is that the bulb is an incandescent or halogen bulb--i.e., something that gets warm when it's lit.

Flip two of the switches on, and wait a few minutes. Don't go into the room yet. then (here's part of the trick) FLIP ONE OF THE TWO SWITCHES OFF.

Now, go into the room. If the light is on, then the switch that's still on is the correct switch (obviously). If the light is off (and here's the rest of the trick:) TOUCH THE LIGHT BULB; if it's warm, then the switch you had on but flipped off is the correct switch. If it's cold, then the third switch which you didn't mess with is the correct switch.

In response to Michael D's answer below, he neglects to note this condition of the riddle: "There is no way to see light inside the room from the outside."--that includes having the door open. If you're able to duck your head in and check the light, then the riddle is pointless, as you can always flick the switches on one by one and check each time.

i'd say...flip one switch on..then open the door but do not go inside..look in and shut the door if the light is not on..keep doing this til the light is on..it says u can only play with the switches when the door is shut..so that solves this problem..and it doesnt say u cant open the door to check if the switch worked..just dont go in..until u see the light is on..wala
