When I turn the key to start I get nothing. All the lights work glow plug comes on and goes out, but it just won't crank. Thank god for standards and a little push power.

do you mean start or crank, there is a BIG difference.

It could be several things, but yes there are relays, fuses, switches, not to mention your fuel injectors, ignition switch, fuel pump, and a few other fun things.
Get the Haynes book at your local auto parts store if you're going to do it yourself. Ahh, check the battery cables, I had the same problem with my old Jetta and is all it was.
