yeah, what was i thinking speaking english down there? maybe hash brown does sound just like home fry with my yankee accent

scattered, smothered, covered, chunked??? Sorry, Waffle House Flash Back. It's just the region, dear. Some still serve the square Home Fries, even though you ask for hashbrowns. That is just the way it is down there. If you see hash browns on the menu, ask if they are the square kind or if they are the "shredded" kind.

Yes they know the difference some restaurants called hash browns home fries. You have to describe the way you want it. Shredded potatoes.
