I was told that the little dark things in the grits are actually bugs that are to be washed out. What is the best way to wash them, from you who do?

they are not bugs, they are little particles of husk from the corn.
You can't wash grits, the grains are too small.

You don't need to wash grits, they've already been processed. If there are bugs in them, you'll know because it will be a whole bug, not some ground up bug. If you store them in an air-tight container, you'll be fine.

Washing grits is actually a taboo for GOOD grits. When you wash them, you wash away some of the starch that will make your grits rich and creamy in the end. No starch, no creaminess. Don't wash grits, eat them!
