Why not make a photo album of moments throughout his life, make color copies and put them into a nice album. My dad can afford to but whatever he wants, and does. I cant afford alot but an album was one of the best gifts I ever gave him

Maybe a really good book on local history or fishing. Or does he need a nice new fishing rod or some accessories like fancy hooks or tackle box? Have a fun celebration by putting up signs (you can buy at a party store) that have grave stones with "RIP" on them and banners that say "Over The Hill". You can buy black crepe paper and hang that, give him a t-shirt with "50 And Fabulous" on it, and a hat too. Bake a cake and make it look like a haunted house, since he likes ghosts.

well I am turnin th big 50 in October and my friends and family keep askin me what I would like, but to be honest I don't know really so I can understand how ya dad feels as 50 is a big birthday and it is rather terryfying to realise your that age. Try researching his past especially before he had you and brov, I would think he liked very much the seventies fashions which included loons (bit like denim flare trousers) and big collar shirts, go to a fancy dress shop and hire him a seventies outfit for the day, play loads a seventies music on the day and get him a tankard with his name on to take to the pub if he likes that sort ov thing, alternatively do the photo album as has been suggested but with a little extra thing like say maybe a leather belt with an engraved buckle, say a fishing or ghosty one with his name engraved on it, I am sure he will treasure it forever.....say happy birthday from me and ya all have loads a fun. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Give him your time. 50 is a milestone and he will always look back to remember how that birthday was spent. Let him have a lovely memory of a day with you and your brother. Take him off somewhere he's never been before then treat him to a fantastic meal, champagne, the works. Or a really good old pub with real beer, if thats more of what he's into.

Buy him a walker from a second hand store! We got so many laughes out of this when we did it. But also get him something serious as well. A good idea is collect all the great pictures and favorite memmories from over the years and make him a scrapbook of memmories. He will have to fight back the tears when he opens that gift! Also its farely inexpensive.

how about seeing if can find a nice old fashioned fishing reel (old ones are quite nice looking) and getting it engraved?
My dad is a fishing fan and we did it for him - old ones can be found on ebay or in some fishing tackle shops - you can spend a little or a lot depending on what sort you want. You can get something perfectly decent for £20 - £50.

While the radios themselves may be expensive, I'll bet there are some great books in print that would interest him on the topic of classic radios. If you could find a pair of those and create a unique card incorporating his love of old radios, I'm sure he'd love it.

You could try findgift.com, they have some unique ideas. Or you could do something personal like a scrapbook or a slide show of family photos. Maybe something like that won't make him feel so old if he realizes all the great memories he's made so far and that there's time for more.
