my question i have it with my sony reciever i find that i have to have the volume on like 40 and it goes to 70 to get a decent sound and hear whats going on does anyone else think that that volume level is pretty high? i mean the reciever i have is the sony ht-ddw870 is there a way to fix this or is this just how it is?

Yes, unfortunately, you will have to get more efficient speakers (Klipsch, BIC Acoustech, or Cerwin Vega are highly efficient and will make a difference) or a much more powerful (at least double the power rating of your current unit) receiver to get decent loudness and a moderate volume level.

You might try adjusting the type of surround sound mode. This could make the sound level louder. Check with your owner's manual for additional details on how to do this.

The number a manufacturer assigns a particular volume level is arbitrary. They could have made it 1 to 7 through the entire volume range or the more familiar 1 to 10. As answered previously more efficient speakers would make a little difference but not much.

Check the input signals from your source (DVD, TV, Computer) .. also try connecting another device (ipod using 1/8"-RCA adapter from radio shack).. to your receiver..

Most receivers do actually need to be up high for whatever reason.. Mines is on like 60% when watching movies..

I too have a sony and needs to be around 35 to 40 to become loud enough to hear,, want to increase your rumble buy a butt kicker and attach it to your couch...
