Cockateils are fun, cheerful birds. They tend to love people once they are accustomed to them. If your bird wasn't hand fed as a baby, it may be difficult to hand tame it. They will talk (males) but their vocabulary is small. They will mimic almost any sound. Dogs barking, any whistle, etc. They love sunlight. Use corn cob bedding in their cage, not newspaper or pine shaving. They are toxic!!!!!!!! Keep a cuddle bone in thier cage to keep thier beek trimmed. Have one perch with sandpaper on it for thier nails to stay trim. If your bird is being a brat, just be patient. Give it time to learn to trust you. Talk to it alot. Nice, easy, soft tones. Don't let a bunch of people gather around it. Have a lot of one on one time with it with no other noises around or people. No music to tv to distract it from you and your voice. It will take time, but will come around. If it is friendly, socialize with other people. The more people that handle it the better. Keep lots of toys in its cage to play with. Feed it fresh fruits and veggies along with a good blend of cockateil seed. No dairy products, to avacodo's (toxic) You can give him pizza crust and meat too. They love it. Lots of treats for him if he's not too friendly. (even if he is you still want to treat him). Keep him out of direct sunlight, but keep the room he's in warm in the winter. (70 degrees is fine). They love to play in water too. Get a sprayer from the dollar store and mist him everyday. He'll love it, and its healthy for him. If he's friendly put a little water in the sink (just up to his butt) and let him play in it. They are a trip to watch in water. Always such cheerful fun little birds with great personalities. Have a vet check once a year from a good avian vet. Never cut his nails or clip his beak or wings yourself. They have a very small blood supply, and if you clip too close, you will kill it. Take it too a professional or to your vet for these things. Good luck to you.

I have 6 Tiels. My least tame is seperated for taming, and my most tame is with the other 4 birds. She still prefers me.

Cockatiels can live past 20 yrs old. If they recieve the propar care that is. They need a propar diet, which includes seeds or pellets, and fresh foods.

They need a large cage with lots of toys. Toys seem to be expensive, but you can make your own for quite cheap. I even have a home made cage housing 5 of my tiels.

Cockatiels come in many different mutations. Mutations do not affect the temperment, but every bird is different.

They are very smart and can learn tricks. Some males even learn to talk. This is not gaurenteed though, so dont be disapointed if you get a male and he doesn't talk. He will probably whistle though.

Tiels can be quite loud, using whistles and screeches to communicate. This has become background noise to me now.

They need at least a few hours of quality time a day. This could be sitting with you watching t.v., or while your reading. They love to read, although its probably not the same type of reading.

A breeder is the best sourse for a first time owner. If it is a good breeder, the bird will be quite tame and loving. Make sure of this first. Also take your new pet to the vet within 2-3 days of bring him/her home. Also, breeders charge much less than pet shops. You can get a rarely-seen-in-pet-store mutation, for the same price as a normal grey in shops.

Tiels are great pets, you just have to be willing to care for them correctly. Also, join a bird forum or two. Many different people to chat with, ask questions, and learn from. Try http://www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/community/index.php

Good luck!

In general, cockatiels make good pets. Be prepared for their noise, as they constantly entertain themselves. Like other birds, they like to throw their food around their cage and outside of it. Shop around for the best prices. I find that private breeders have the best prices and the healthier birds. Hand raised babies make better pets than birds that have little or no human contact. Like all pet birds, learn to clip the wings or your little feathered friend may fly off into the wild blue yonder. If you buy more than one, put them in separate cages. Although not always true, putting two birds in the same cage causes them to become less tame. Buy the largest cage that fits into the area where you want to keep your bird. This area needs to be away from areas where dangerous fumes may reach the bird. Keep the cage away from drafts around doors and A/C vents. Offer your bird a variety of seeds, peanuts, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables. Watch the water bowl, keep it clean, and filled with clean water. (Your bird will likely bathe in the water bowl, so keep an eye on it.)

Hello, I have had 2 pairs of cockatiels. 1 pair had 2 clutches of eggs. I have 1 of the babies now & he is 2 years old. They are fun birds I love to hear them sing in the morning. Peanut likes to play games with me. They love fruits as long as you don't give them too much. They are also good companons. Peanut loves to rub his head on my hubbies beard. He likes his head scratched. If youhave a pair to mate they are not as friendly. The male will try to protect the female. It won't matter who you are. If you separate them You will be able to pet them. As long as they can't see each other. To me cockatiels are the best bird you can have.

I ought to accept as true with the post by using Myrrh above. Leaving a small tip is purely obnoxious and makes you look rude and stupid. go away no tip, and then communicate to the administrative. that's the right thank you to handle it.
