Another possibility is allergies. If your dog is allergic to something in your yard, then it gets all over his feet, he could have irritated skin around there. It took us a while to figure out why our dog was always licking his feet and crying. Make sure there's not a splinter or something in there first, and then watch him for a few days. See if he is licking his feet more after he is outside. If so, the vet should be able to give him something to help him out.

personally if i were u i would still keep them seperate... i know people say dogs tongues are not that bad etc but seriously i wouldnt want him licking my baby... i guess best option is when he is licking, try and distract him with a toy or game so that he is not being told off but is being given a different option for what he can do. if he continues to go back to the baby and lick more i would be putting him outside. you wont be able to keep your baby in a play pen forever so if anything perhaps try the othe way around and put the dog in there? when he is staring and crying and whimpering u could try distracting him again or something... its really tough but you will need to try because if he is doing a motherly instinct type thing then will he try and pick baby up by scruff of the neck when baby does something wrong? And hurt him? i wouldn't be letting him be that close to a baby... my toddler plays with my puppy and i quite often have to separate them and find that it gives them both a time out...

this actually sort of happened to my dog too. he doesnt whimper or anything but he licks his foot ALL the time. and the paw turns red. i took him to the vet and they said everything looks normal but it is possible to get a infection inside the paw due to maybe stepping into some crap that irritated the paws! i suggest u take it to the vet and have them take a look just to be safe!

Inspect his foot. If it is a specific foot, check if there are any injuries. Check the nails, have you cut them? If the problem persists take him to the vet.

You could have a problem somewhere in his foot. I'd take him to the vet to make sure. Check his pads as well. Sometimes when their pad is bruised they will do that as well.

He may have something stuck in the pad or a split nail. Take him to the vet to make sure it doesn't become infected.

you might want to look at his paw, it might be cut or something stuck in it....dogs lick wounds to heal them and if he's hert then that would explain the whimping
