I live in Knysna which is relatively safe I got the dog purely for a companion, but as he has gotten older he is more restless and diff for me to handle, I also think he gets lonely in the day when I go to work... I do not want to upset his world at the mo, so not to sure if a little friend would be a good idea...

It is a fine idea, but the little friend really needs to be spayed or neutered, or it will make his restlesness worse..rather than better.

Here's the way dog math works:
1 good dog + 1 bad dog = 2 bad dogs

Getting a second dog will not cure your poorly behaved first dog. Plus often Shar Pei's are dog aggressive anyway.

First, neuter him. That will eliminate the rush he's getting from all that testosterone. Then go back to obedience work. You need to make sure he is comfortable with your leadership and knows what you expect of him. If you refuse to be in charge, he is going to think he has to do it. The only way to be in charge is through leadership.

There is a school of training that says "Nothing comes for Free." You need to make the dog work for anything from you. He doesn't get to ask you for petting. You ignore that. But that doesn't mean you never give your dog love. That means that you call him over, make him sit then pet him. You can do that 100 times a day. But if he asks, you ignore him. There's more to it than this, but know that this technique really works with pushy dogs.

Here's a good link to an article about this technique.

Another dog will never cure your dog of being difficult to handle - you'll only end up with 2 dogs with behaviour problems. If you train the dog you have so he recognizes you as his pack leader, another dog would probably be a great idea to keep him company. Not a female though, unless he's neutered and his "girlfriend" will be spayed. That would be more trouble than you want to handle. Most dogs really enjoy having a companion so work on training this dog and then get another one.

unfortunatley sharpei's are very if-y dogs. I've worked at a few animal hospitals and boarding facilities. I'd have to say 99% of the ones i've seen are 1 owner/ 1 dog dogs. In otherwords, there are more than happy just it being them and there owner. Just them. But you can certainly try. I wouldn't make a commitment to one yet. but it doesn't hurt to try.

Sure get him a friend as long as he is neutered and she is spayed. If you adopt from a shelter, you can make sure the dogs get along before the adoption is finalized. Good luck.

male dogs are most likely will get along with a female than another male. You should have both dogs altered though as this will nearoy 100% eliminate the chance of them getting cancer

before you actually bring the girl home have both of them be introduced to each other......they might not like eachother and your going to be stuck with to dogs that don't like each other.
