I'm thinking about crate training him with this kennel. Any suggestions on helping him with this and any training tips?

Hi there, first of all i will say that crate training is the best thing you can do for a dog!

Please whatever you do, do-not put him in a close the door, this will imprint fear into him, and takes even longer to conquer.

First of all introduce him slowly, put the crate in the room, door open, slowly playing ball around the crate, when he feels secure throw the ball inside, encouraging him to pop in and out, making him realize nothing bad is going to happen.

Slowly introduce feeding in the crate, when you know he's is comfortable, start closing the door, for a couple of minutes, when you open the door to allow him to leave give him plenty of praise.

This can take a while, but if you are committed it is a thoroughly worthwhile

Praise either with treats, fuss or toys is the key

How old is this puppy? What happened to him that made him afraid of the kennel? Most dogs may be uncertain and cautious but not fearful unless the kennel has been used as a punishment in the past.

Anyway, try putting some toys, a couple of treats in the kennel with him and leave him in the kennel for very short amounts of time (gradually lengthening the time) while you are at home. You can stay in his sight, and when the puppy calms, talk to him, praise him a little and let him out. When he's a bit more used to the kennel, you can have some toys or treats in there, put him in and leave the door open.

Most dogs learn that their kennel is their safe place and go in it on their own when they want to be alone for a while. Never ever use the kennel as a punishment, and he should get used to it.
Be patient, calm and keep the time he's in it short at first.

Good luck

I agree with TN Girl. If you don't confine him to the kennel, but give him a reason to go in and out freely for the time being, he will get used to it. Make sure that the kennel isn't dark. Just like babies, sometimes puppies are afraid of the dark.

Im not sure what you are refering to as a kennel and crate traning him in a kennel. a crete is a small cage that holds the dog. a kennel is large where the dog has room to run so I am confused as to what you mean????

If it is a puppy it just doesn't know. Put him in and go. Don't be a push over he's gonna cry. Be sure he gets a treat for being in there, but not if he is whining

make it a happy place, put some water in it, and his favorite toy, also have a nice comfy place to lay down, maybe even throw a treat in there for him to find.

leave him access to it for a few days, he will go in it to drink and get his toy, he'll get used to it.
