Sounds like California used to be! Go to the impound yard & find out what's goin' on. You will need your owner & registration papers from the DMV, as well as you valid photo ID or Drivers License. If you cannot locate your car, then you should report it as a stolen vehicle & give all the info to the Officer who takes your report. Perhaps these weren't real Police Officers! You could also CALL the Police Department & ask them how you would go about retrieving your vehicle. If you didn't get the Officers names or Badge numbers or their Vehicle #, you should at least know the address of the gas station & the time & date of the incident. I suspect your friend may be leaving out some facts, but it IS possible that this happened.

Pay the registration. In the state of California if a vehicle is expired in excess of 6 months it is an automatic tow. That time frame varies from state to state.

Needs to go to the police station, find out how much it costs for new tags, go get them and then the police will release his vehicle plus charge him for towing. You play, you pay....

they probably put the paperwork as the car being parked with nobody around and had it towed . this might work out for the better if the inpound just lets him pick it up and the cops didn't write a ticket
