Typically i think its good if someone knows them personally and have heard them speak. You may want to also consider their theological positions, style (charimastic, etc.). I've asked speakers to submit sample sermons (just so you can know their theology).

Speak to people who know the speaker, typically when sources you know are reliable recommends -- it's a lot more trustworthy than someone giving their own credentials.

Are they Bible-based? Are they loving? etc.

Blessings to you with that responsibility,

Nickster

Make sure the two church cultures are not too divergent. You may end up with the "cheerleader" speaker or the speaker letting his snake bite everyone.

Assuming that you are Christian, this is like interviewing an applicant. You could begin by checking out a radio station's website. Christian Radio stations normally have all types of great resources and links. For example, star 99.1 fm.... they have a great website w/awesome links.
Enjoy!

Tell them that in order to speak they must be able to prove that God exists.
