I buy Maxximum from Walmart. It's about mid-priced compared to other brands but I chose it because I read all the labels on all the brands before deciding. Cheap store brands like Ole Roy are not good for your dog. The most expensive are not always the best either. Look at the label and read the guaranteed analysis. It is a rough measure of protein, fat and water. The ingredients are listed in descending order. The first ingredient is what there is most of and the last what there is least of. So you don't want a food that has ground yellow corn or a meat by-product listed as the first ingredient. That would mean the main source of protein (chicken, beef, lamb) would be third and therefore too low in quality protein. You would want to follow a vets recommendations for puppies, older dogs or extremely active dogs as well because the protein requirements would be different.

The key to reasonable is not to overfeed. Major problem. The best food on the market currently is Science Diet. The company meets AFCO standards daily not every 6 months as companies are required to do. The ingredients never change. Something other companies cannot say. If they do when you're buying it ask them to put it in writing, they won't. 1995 study showed that 1 household, 1 dog, over 1 year spent an average of $ 450.00 on treats. Treats are not necessary, do not have to meet standards because they are not food, and are a major contributor to obesity. Buy an excellent quality dog food - do not judge this on price - read Consumer's Report and then read their apology to Science Diet. Measure the food. Exercise daily. And keep your hand out of the cookie jar and you will save money.

Okay here's the thing I have two large dogs (boxer, eng. bulldog) I always fed Iams when I was working and I recently stopped working so trying to cut back expenses I tried to find a cheaper dog food to SLOWLY change them to. Well I'm a shopaholic and I watch prices pretty closely and read labels carefully. YOU KNOW WHAT I FOUND OUT! The cheaper bags of food were going to cost me MORE! The serving sizes differ in most dog food and Iams has had the best price so far when you figure in how much of the food your dog has to eat. So like my Iam's lamb and rice has a serving for my dogs of 2 3/4 cups - 3 1/3 cups and the cheaper foods had a much bigger serving size! What a rip off! Just means they put a lot of junk in the food your dog doesn't need... and you know were that ends up... on your lawn in doo doo. So save yourself and the pooper scooper the trouble and get a good brand of dog food.

I've raised GSD and mixed breeds on Pedigree dog food. Its not the cheapest, nor the most expensive, but have never had a bad reaction to the food from the dogs. If I were you, I would also check the ingridents of the dog food that your looking to use..there are so many different brands out there...some have nutrition value, some are just bi products of chicken, fish, etc. And when in doubt..use your computer and research..I did alot of research and reading on various foods, medicine, etc..Your the one who has to determine what your dog needs.

I have always used Purina dog chow, My dogs coat is shiny and healthy, However, not every dog with do well with some foods, STAY away from the really cheep stuff, look at the back of the bag and find the protein content, and look at vitamins, omega is a good thing to look for, vitamins and minerals are important also, Ask your vet what he or she feels your dogs might need in the way of feed, what ever you try, you need to stick with it for at least two to three weeks before you swithch, and if you do swithch, do it slowly, a little at a time, NOT all at once. Good luck.

We use Diamond brand dog food. Has the same makeup as Iams and Science Diet but is quite a bit less expensive. Can be found at some feed stores but we buy ours at Pet Supplies Plus.

The cheaper brands of dog foods contain useless grains and fillers, so in the long run, a dog will actually need to eat more. The premium brands such as Innova, Merrick and Nutro may cost more, but because they contain less fillers, your dog will actually eat less. Just compare labels and do some research and you will see the difference. Bottom line....premium foods cost more, but last longer.

When buying dog food, make sure it is fresh. Dog food will last a long time, but the quality suffers as it ages! I would advise you use a well-known brand..... they didn't get to be well-known for no reason I personally think Iams and Eukanuba are the best available.

I feed my dogs Science Diet. It is the best food formulated for their digestive system. No it isn't cheap but my dogs are a part of my family and I wouldn't feed my kids cheap food that has less nutritional value just to save money. Pet ownership is a huge responsibility and they need good Vet approved food.
