i've heard that is safest for children under twelve years old to ride in the back seat (and to be in a booster until they are eight), but it seems that not many people adhere to that.

This is a lengthy subject but I will try to summarize as much as possible. Your baby will go through 4 steps in terms of car seats.

Step 1 Infant Car Seats/Convertible Seats Rear Facing
Newborn up to at least 1 year old and at least 20 lbs MUST ride rear facing, on the back seat, on an infant car seat on rear facing on a convertible car seat. The best in the market are the Companion from Britax and even better and very flexible is the Primo Viaggio from Peg Perego. You can see these seats at http://www.kidzthings.com/infant.html...... They go from 189.99 to 229.99 with free shipping. You can choose to start with a convertible seat instead of a an infant seat once the convertible will offer the rear facing option.

Step 2 Toddler Seats / Forward Facing Convertible Seats
After your baby is at least 1 year old and at least 20 lbs you can move into a convertible seat that will be forward facing. These are the most popular choices and most parents will start with this option for a newborn since you can use it rear facing and then forward facing. You can see a good selection of convertible seats here http://www.kidzthings.com/convertible.ht... they start at 199.99 with free shipping.

Step 3 Preschoolers / Forward Facing Booster Seats
When your kid is about 4 years old you will be ready to move into a booster seat that will work until your kid is about 8 years old. Booster seats are very important. Please visit www.boosterseat.gov for additional information. You can also see a good selection of booster seats at http://www.kidzthings.com/booster.html..... They start at 89.99 with free shipping.

Step 4 Seat Belt
Kids 4'9" can ride on the back seat using the seat belt. This will be usually around 9 or so. Kids grow in different paces so please visit www.boosterseat.gov for more information. Most states will have different interpretations of booster seats so please make sure you are familiar with your state's law.

I hope this will help.

Please remember to visit www.boosterseat.gov

Thanks!

well Kansas just passed a law saying children ages 4 to 7 an that are between 40 and 80 pounds or that are less then 4 feet 9 inches tall should be put into a booster seat in the back an it also say that children ages 1 to 4 who are between 20 to 40 pounds should be in a safety seat in the back facing front. but my opinion is that they should be in a car seat till they at least 5 an in a seat belt at all time in the car an in the backseat at 6 on. I hope this helps you.

Check for car seat laws where you live because that's frequently a factor in how long people use car/booster seats for their kids. When I lived in Illinois until recently, kids needed to be in a car/booster seat until they were 7 or 8, regardless of their size.

Michigan recently passed a law requiring kids to be in car/booster seats until they are 4 feet 9 inches tall, which means I should go out and buy one for my 9-year-old daughter, who hasn't needed one for well over a year in Illinois. She's about 4 feet 8 inches and weighs about 90 pounds, so I'm going to take my chances. Her backside doesn't fit into a regular booster seat, so it's not like I can just go to Wal-Mart and buy one.

It is safest for kids to be in the back seat. When you're little, an air bag can do some serious damage to your body if it goes off in front of you.

Ur absolutly right I have even seen a few people with there toddler in the laps not even under a belt. Infant car seats are upto 25lbs Todler car seets are from 25- 80 Pounds and Boosters are 50-80 pounds. I don't like them though they scare me. Also i do believe children under 12 should be in the back seat regardless of weight.

3 year old is still in a car seat (not quite 30 lbs yet)
5 and 7 year olds are in high back boosters.
I expect that my kids will even STILL be in a booster when they are 8 as they are small for their ages.
