Nope, you gotta do it. You wouldn't want to skip that step anyway.

When you do that, you will lost Windows Me if you decide to install into the same harddisk partition. Just simply install WindowXP into another partition or decide to install a fresh one, do not upgrade. But anyway, dont worry 'cause even you upgrade, you dont have to check for compatablity. Just plz make sure to backup all important data first :-D

With Windows it is recommended that you do a complete fresh reinstall. XP is significantly different from ME.
Back up all your stuff first. Before you install XP, partition your hard drive so that Windows is on C and you have a D and maybe an E drive too. Put you data on D or E. That way all your data will be on a different partition to the OS and future upgrades/reinstalls will be easier.

No. Make sure you have a legal, true copy of Windows XP. It's $100 to buy the upgrade & a lot more stable than Windows Me. I've had my XP for 2 years now & haven't had any problems with it. I had issue after issue with Me almost daily.

the upgrade is exactly the same as the full vesion...my os was installed from an upgrade disc onto a totally clean HD.All it does is ask you to put in an old os disc in like '95 '98 etc and then does a complete install.....and it's cheaper!!

Its not checking your computer, because it would be rather stupid to detect it does not run well on this machine, because XP is slow on every machine and heats your processor up a lot.
Its actually to test the person at the machine to see if he is dumb enough to go to XP and to test how easy he can be fooled and manipulated.

Just buy the complete xp and don't upgrade. I think upgrades are second class solutions. Of course that's my opinion and everyone has one.

if you skipped that step, windows wouldn't run, and you might have a crashed computer, thats inaccessible.
