As much as i'd hate to say this, humankind wouldn't survive long without religion. When I say religion I don't mean God, Yahweh, Allah and all that jazz, I mean that eventually people will find new things to worship and obsess over. Because thats what religion is basically, one gargantuan cult.

For example, years from now if religion was indeed abolished, people might look back and think - wow, David Hasselhoff had it all. Popular music in Germany, a talking car, and he was a judge on America's got Talent. The hoff must be some sort of divine message from the supreme order of the cosmos.

See what I mean? In any case, if you're still skeptical then consider that humankind only grows through beligerant and warlike activity. Thats how people progress through the ages. Now whats usually the #1 cause of war? mhmmm.

Religion is the single cause of more wars on this planet than anything else. Division of any kind creates tension and a perception among people that they ae somehow better than anyone else. When politics and religion collide (e.g George W Bush's USA' you have a very dangerous situation where the power to bring about change in a particular area is possessed by one side or another. Humankind has been very destructive because of religion and if energies were focussed toward other things the world would be a better place.

Consider this:

A society is capable of surviving for thousands of years unless it is attacked from within or without by hostile forces. where such an attack occurs, the primary targets are it's religious and national gods and heroes,it's potential of leadership and the self respect and integrity of it's members.
If you look around you , you will find countless examples of these points. They scream at us every day from the newspapers and TV.
Probably the most critical point of attack on a culture is it's religious experience. Where one can destroy or undermine religious institutions then the entire fabiric of the society can be quickly subverted or brought to ruin.
For the last hundred years or so religion has been beset with relentless attack. You have been told it’s the “opiate of the masses “, that it’s unscientific, that it is primitive, in short , that it is a delusion.
The source of this kind of attack is always covert and hidden. It is promoted by a few who have a vested interest in a slave society.
Unfortunately these few rely on creating fear and insecurity in others
to forward and promote their enemy propaganda. These others feel correctly they have to defend themselves from an attack, but because the real enemy is hidden, they can be manipulated to attack what they really should be defending as they cannot see the real enemy.

The key here is that underneath all these attacks on organised religion there is one fundemental target:
The spirituality of man, your own basic spiritual nature, self respect and peace of mind.

Though I agree totally, I do not see it happening anytime soon. There is way too much insecurity, suspicion, and just plain ignorance to do away with religion at this time. However, if humanity doesn't destroy itself within the next couple of thousand years, we may yet see a time when it is realized that ancient writings, myths, and dogma are not conducive to growth and will find it unnecessary to continue them. I must say however, that it is my hope that spirituality will never go away as this is the basis for hope, and creativity in human culture.

Praise be! Has someone else seen that whilst religion is - in theory - something noble and valid, and may keep mankind humble and generous in spirit, and their dealings with others, that the truth of the matter could be seen as different religions, sometimes factions of the very same faith, are content to knock the tar out of each other, in the name of their bigger, better God. The Bible, and the Koran (spelling varies) are both dripping with the blood of the 'saved', who have sought to take their 'message of peace' to others, usually with blunt and/or sharp implements. Oh, and Mysterio 619, REPORTED, BY ME, for that stupid, ignorant and unjustified attack on this questions' asker.

Peace.

Getting rid of religion is impossible. Religion comes forth from the knowledge that there is something greater out there, that
there is an unquenchable thirst in mankind that says, "I wasn't made for this earth." And there is only one way to quench that thirst... by loving and serving the only Lord, and by one day being united with Him in Glory.

Religion was created for a person to store his/her spiritual beliefs. It's a sacred part in each human being.
However, it got big and expanded beyond that small internal scope in our hearts.
With the sweet aroma of money floating and hovering over religious buildings, the caretakers decided to capitalize and collect.
Is there pure, God-centered spirituality in the Vatican or in that so-called Crystal Church up in L.A? Heck, my outhouse has more than either of them!
~sorry, i'm rambling, and i didn't answer your question :(

Madelyn Murray O'Hair did her level best to live without religion of any kind.

She ended up bitter, friendless, poor and forgotten. She also ended up murdered and nobody bothered to find the killer, not even her son.

Is THAT the kind of survival and growth you're talking about?

Atheism isn't a faith, nor does it have a dogma or objective. it extremely is only the shortcoming of god ideals. no longer believing in unicorns won't provide up wars the two. that does no longer imply there's a reason to have faith in unicorns. yet, atheism is in lots of instances a edge results of serious thinking, empiricism and practise which do certainly shrink suffering, bigotry, preclude dying and ailment. faith did no longer deliver us germ theory. It did lots to sell inequality and irrational hatreds and fears. It did no longer provide us democracy, yet saved us for hundreds of years in the thrall of kings who claimed divine rights. once you argue against atheism, you argue against rational theory, skepticism and open mindedness. faith is superstition and Bronze or Iron Age dogma. Do you fairly think of those issues will help humanity to progression? EDIT: TR1611, effective attempt to Godwin this thread. Hitler grow to be a Christian and wrote and spoke in lots of instances of killing Jews being God's artwork. He grow to be an insane and bigoted tyrant, no longer a guy of technological understanding or good judgment.

Certainly.

Civilisation has reached the level it has in spite of religion, not because of it. Religion only exploits civilisation like a parasite. It does not contribute anything valuable, at all.
