I bought the bike pre-assembled and it doesn't have basic maintenane instructions. This is the first 21-speed I've ever had and the first mountain bike I've ever had. It's an excellent bike for riding around this city, but I don't know how to fix the thing!

First, find where the cable is fastened to the brakes. There are several different assemblies for brakes, so I can't describe it too well for you. Loosen the nut holding the cable secure (it's on a bolt with a groove in it for the cable to pass through; the cable is held by friction between the nut and the cable), and squeeze the brakes together close to the wheel with your hands. Pull the cable tight, while holding the brakes together, and tighten the nut again. Some types of brakes have a special screw to finely adjust the tightness of the brakes. If there is one, you should probably unscrew it about halfway before starting (it might be better to have it screwed in all the way sometimes before you start, but you never know if you'll need to loosen the brakes; just play with it and you'll figure it out). You will recognize the screw because it is hollow and the cable passes through it. I realize this must be difficult for you to imagine, so I recommend you go to your local public library for bike repair books if you need illustrations. Good luck!

let me guess you bought it at a department store, maybe even worse at wal-mart. If you had bought it at a bike shop then almost all have a 30 day tune up as all bikes have a little break in period.

Best advise throw, it a way, go to a real bike shop and start over. (probably not going to happen though)
Second best advise have said bike shop fix it this time then buy a book with basic maintenance tips, photos really help.

brake is usually a barrel adjustment at the lever but don't get too carried away with this. If you need more than a turn or two then it's best to undo the cable at the brake and take in (or let out if it's to tight) a little "slack".

There should be an adjustment barrel near the lever or the brake assembly. Turn the barrel to counter-clockwise to back it out of the brake or lever assembly, until you have the slack out of the cable or have it set to the desired tightness. Good Luck!

well if you wanna do stoppies theres always a breakless way of doing them, go slow (dont want to fall on your face) and where your front tire is stick your foot in there ()'| ^^^ 123 1-tire 2-your foot 3-you ha break his toe? you dont have to jam your foot in there, and the only way you can get hurt on this is if your going fast, so if your going to try this i recomend going verrry slow
