I've heard people say its just a lot of crap, and i've heard others say its the scientific truth. I know the jist of it and it seems plausible, but can someone please explain to me what exactly it is?

Over the course of the 4.3 billion years that the earth has been in existence, the global temperature has mirrored exactly the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Every gallon of gasoline burned adds 20 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Right now, the carbon dioxide levels higher than at any other point in human existence and the global temps are warmer than at any other point in human existence.

Some people feel that the answer is to bring the economy to a screeching halt. Others think that this a vast conspiracy created by anti-capitalist foe political reasons. They are both wrong in my opinion.

Acknowledging that the science is sound is the first step.

Next, we as a people need to reward enviro=concious industry. Buying energy efficient appliances from cars and refrigerators down to lightbulbs will help eliminate 55% of our current CO2 emissions. As the money flows into this sector, industry will recognize the trend and focus research and develpment into "green" industry.

Within 50 years, world population extrapolations are expected to be somewhere near 9 billion people. We have to do something now.

The debate is not over whether or not the planet's average surface temperatures are getting hotter. Because they are. The debate is whether or not human released greenhouse gases (CO2, methane) are doing the warming.

There is just WAAAAY too much to discuss here, every article has another one that refutes it. If you really want to get down into the nitty-gritty of it, you'll have to sit down and read at least 10 or so articles from each side of the debate. I'll direct you to 2 good starting points, one which believes in anthropogenic (human caused) global warming, and one which thinks the Earth is just in a natural warming cycle.

You have to digest the evidence yourself. Having somebody tell you one side is going to skew your viewpoint. Anybody can sound convincing if you don't hear a counter argument.

So here's two websites below. Just be sure that if you Google for some articles that you read the credentials of the author. A lot of people will post bogus claims, and you have to sort through until you find real ones.

Global warming is VERY BAD. That basically when the Earth's atmosphere heats up. I dare you to check out the average temperatures in your area over the years. If you see a change, blame global warming. Some people think that soon enough, there will be another Ice Age. That would happen if the temp keeps rising. Scary huh?

Global warming is due to the release of so-called greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These gases absorb incoming radiation and re-emit it in the infrared frequency, which we feel as heat. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide and water vapor, both of which are necessary for plant growth. Maybe in a few hundred thousand years the Earth will be at its normal temperature, because for the last 2 million years we have been experiencing global cooling.

Here is the basic explanation:
Machinery, such as cars, produce gases. The gases rise up into the atmosphere and create a 'wall' of gases. Like the glass in a greenhouse, heat can get in, but it can't get out. Gore's movie explains this best. A lot of people say it isn't true, but those are the people who haven't seen the movie.

when we burn a substance it consumes oxygen and emits various gases it may be volatile, poionous, odourless, colourlessetc.
among these gases co gas is the gas which is emitted commonly.
it is odourless,poisonous.
it has the capacity to absorb the sunlight more efficiently.
when light rays in the form of IR rays from sun fall on the earth`s crust some of them will be absorbed and most of the radiation will be reflected to space.
when the gases like carbon monoxide(co) are trapped in atmosphere, these co atoms absorb the sun light and reflect back towards the earth`s crust.this causes rise in temperature. and the cycle repeats thus incresing the temperature.
another very powerful green house gas is methane it has 500 times more capacity to absob IR rays than co.

global vvarmin is nothin but the earth heatin up
its pretty simple vvat happens is vven vve pollute our mother earth vvith more green house gases these gases 4rm a coat vvhich allows radiation 4rm the sun 2 get in and vvil not allow the radiation 4rm the earth 2 escape so dis good 4 a certain level or else earth vvould b like antartica throughout but vven it increases it leads 2 the heatin of the earth

As this planet gets more populated, more people are around to pass gasses out of their deriere areas. As these gasses floart up into the sky the sun warms these gasses up and causes them to ignite, this cause the Aurora Borealis (look it up on the interent)
The super heated gasses in the atmosphere warms the planet and we get warmer weather and violent hurricanes.

It's a scheme by anti-capitalists to drag the US down to the level of France or Bangladesh. The US is an economic powerhouse and the rest of the world can't keep up. So instead of trying to join us, they try to bring us down to their third-world, cesspool level. It's a bad deal for us, a bad deal for everyone alive today and a bad deal for your kids and grandkids.
