Preterism is the belief that all Bible prophecies, including those concerned with the Second Coming of Jesus, the Resurrection of the Dead, the Rapture, the Judgment and the arrival of the Kingdom of God came to complete fulfillment in AD 70 at the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple as predicted by Jesus

It's a theory.

What is preterism? This theory argues that all Bible prophecy has been fulfilled; it states that nothing remains on the prophetic calendar.

It is not gaining strength nor popularity in any church where the members are willing to stand up for the truth.

Most of the discussions are based on the AD70 controversy, which I won't go into. See http://www.christianseparatist.org/briefs/sb1.06.html for that discussion.

Preterism teaches that all prophecies were fulfilled in 70 AD when Titus destroyed Jerusalem and they believe that the Lord came back and we are living in the kingdom now. It is popular because people don't wish to face judgment. When the Lord Jesus Christ come back the second time He is coming to judge and make war. Revelation 19: 11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. Revelation 20: 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. Revelation 20: 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Revelation 20: 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Why is this gaining popularity...? Who knows, but through human history (especially as it related to religion and the church) people are always seeing doomsday on the horizon. So, I guess the answer is... human nature (or stupidity, it is sometimes hard to tell).
