Lets say I'm using an IGBT. I have it hooked up like a MOSFET inverter lets say. If I have the source energized with AC, and I apply a DC current to the gate, will I get AC as output, will the IGBT rectify the output current, or will I get DC riding over AC?

An IGBT is an Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor. Very similar to a MOSFET, but with higher gain. I am looking to make a cheap solid state relay to switch AC. I know that soild-state relays are available, but not in the amperage rating I need.
