I have a six week old kitten. It bites when it is playfull. How can I stop it from this habit? One bit of advice said to say "ouch" and hold the cat to the floor for a few seconds. This works for a short period of time but is completely forgotton the next day.

Kittens love to play. Kittens play with each other by biting and wrestling. Unfortunately, sounds like you are her only play mate. As long as she is a kitten and does not have another kitty to play with, she will bite you. This is in her young nature, she does not know not to bite you. You can help the situation two ways. You can go to the pet store or Wal-Mart and buy her some chewing toys (they especially like those balls with the bells in the inside that make a lot of noise) or get this poor loney kitten a companion. I would choose both options but it is your decision. . . .

What I did was play sessions I would have a toy next to me and if he would start to bite me I would put the toy in his mouth if he continued to bite me I would end the play session right there and firmly but gently grab the nape of his neck and look him streight in the eye and yell NO! you don't do that! and then hold him down till he relaxes and then walk away. another thing you can try is get a bottle of bitter end spray at petco and put that on your hand and your cat won't like the taste he gets. Don't know how well that works because I haven't tried it. your cat will also grow out of it but you need to make it known that biting is not acceptable.

If it is just growing out it's teeth buy it a chew toy to use for all of its biting needs. make sure its not to hard but not to soft so the kitten will be able to have a satisfying bite. If it decides to ignore it put it in a place were its food, water, and litter box is and there is nothing to chew (like a garage) and just put the kitten in there for about an hour. you can expect good results.

He is just playing and exploring- like a little kid. Get plenty of chewy type toys. Wear gloves when playing with the kitten until it outgrows the habit. You should not really try to correct this behavior because it is a natural part of being a baby and exploring. It will outgrow it before you know it. You can get gardener type gloves for $1-2 at Ocean State.

1. Make sure it doesn't have rabies.
2. It's a kitten, it may just be a phase.
3. If you found the kitten stray, that by itself explains it.
4. That's what they do, as in all cats. And if it's declawed, it may get more mouthy, that could be the problem. And if it bites really hard, as in blood hard, make sure it isn't just playing. If it is biting cuz your doing something it doesn't like, your abviously doing something it doesn't like....

I don't know if this works for cats, but it does work for dogs. Using your hand like a mouth, grab the cat and put it on it's back every time it happens. Hold the cat there for about a minute or two.

Consistancy is the key......your cat will get the hang of it. Or, you can get a toy that is stuffed and a little bigger and let her wrestle with it when you get tired of being bitten. That has helped me in the past. You are on the right track though.....keep it up!

Never use your hands when playing with kittens. Hopefully it isn't too late for this one to unlearn this habit.

Obviously this doesn't mean you don't literally use your hands - just that you would have a toy in your hands; you don't make your hands into a toy.
