Honesty always works. Breaking up or being broken up with is an important part of growing up. Be honest, without being hurtful. If you are interested in someone else, thank him for his friendship but you no longer can continue a relationship in that way. If he just bugs you, let him know that he is a good person, but the two of you just aren't compatible. If he says he can change, tell him he shouldn't change, and that you are sure he will find someone who likes him for exactly who he is. As long as you are sensitive to his feelings and honest it will be fine. If you lie or use a cliche "Like its me not you.", it will be too transparent and make it more difficult to end.

It's like a band-aid. You just have to rip it off. More pain quickly is better than small amount of pain for a long period of time. Unless you are willing to work it out, then do it right away, no matter how hard it is.

Just do so; you're not responsible for how he deals with the news. Be kind when you're delivering it, though.
