I was raised Roman Catholic and learned, after I became an adult, that the reason for eating fish on Friday was because there was a shortage of meat and the fish law was what the Church used to cope. It had nothing whatsoever to do with religion even though it was implied that it did and would be a sin if you ate meat on Friday. Some years ago the Church declared that it was now OK to eat meat on Friday. To this day, there are many Catholics who will not eat meat on Friday.

People used treat Sunday as a day of rest, so no really fresh fish was available on Sunday or Monday... The best day to ensure freshly caught fish would be available was mid week on...
That is why fasting days (when people ate fish) were Fridays (and at different times Wednesdays) along with religous holidays...

I have always it just was so because of the churches influence on cultural society--or maybe like my friend says we need to eat fish every week and its easy to remember Friday is fish day

It is the only reason there is for no meat on Fridays. It was the catholic church that had the rule. No other reason.
