Isn't it interesting that so many people are more upset that he drove drunk than that he verbally assaulted police officers with profane racial slurs? I wonder if that would still be true if he'd been spouting off about races other than Jews.

Further, he's always been up-front about his struggle with addiction, and although it was wrong for him to drive drunk (endangering himself and others), it is a factor of his disease. It's not excusable, but it's understandable, and I can't imagine why people are so shocked and judgemental about it. I have compassion for his struggle to be sober, and I hope he gets the help he needs for the sake of himself and his family, and so he doesn't end up doing something stupid like driving drunk again.

But he's always professed Christian tolerance and denied anti-Semitism, even when accused of it during the making & theater run of "The Passion of the Christ." This, to me, is the betrayal, the hypocrisy -- to have presented himself as tolerant, then to reveal himself as a bigot. Hate language doesn't just pop out of a person without an underlying bias behind it. I believe that everyone has some kind of bias, no matter where they are in their journey of life -- and some biases are best left unconfessed while the person works through them. I just think it was shamefully hypocritical to vehemently deny the bias and then later show it so clearly. The explosive anger may also be a function of the disease of addiction, but it is also a revelation of his underlying beliefs, and exposes him as a hypocrite who, through lies, convinced people to believe in him, and this is more a reflection on his personal character than driving drunk.

I just think it's an unfortunate statement of the society we live in that (some) people are more bothered by his drunk driving arrest than by his hypocrisy and hate.

wrong on all counts!

Edited based on other responses:

It is impossible to make this into a MISTAKE - I accidentally ingested enough booze unknowingly to bring my blood level past .09 then I accidentally pulled my keys out of my pocket then I tripped and fell into the driver's seat where in an effort to stabilize myself the hand holding the keys reached out and fell into the ignition and without any intention on my part I was driving on the freeway under the influence - Just a mistake I didn't mean to drink and drive and to make matters worse I was pulled over by the police and when I opened my mouth to say good evening occifer - I accidentally called him a dirty (*&$(**(^$%) - Honestly how was I to know he wasn't a Christian _ It was just a mistake - I am only human - who out there hasn't accidentally gotten drunk and billigerant - THERE IS NO MISTAKE PEOPLE - this was a deliberate act of "I'm untouchable and you don't count"

I would feel exactly the same way if it had been Joe Nobody - the act was completely reprehensible - and I can't believe anyone is giving him a break - He got drunk loaded a gun pointed and fired - that is what you do when you get behind the wheel intoxicated. Celebrity or not this is never right!

IF an every day person did this, you would not hear about it.
It's amazing what power we give to so called famous people.

He is plastered all over every magazine in the world. He didn't kill someone. I am not saying he was right. He should not drive drunk, no one should drive after one drink. He shouldn't have said what he did. It will hurt his career and it should.

But, T.V. acted as if World War lll broke out. The guy is human.

All of you that have never done what he did, please stand up. The only difference is getting caught and not getting caught.
The very sad part of this mess is........Can you only imagine HOW many people were on the streets that night driving drunk??

Well, having drank tequilla myself before, I know that just because you say or do something, after having drank that poison, doesn't reflect on your normal line of thinking. I actually thought I could fly once while drunk on tequilla and set out to prove that I was correct. A broken arm and several stitches later, I determined drinking tequilla is not a wise thing to do.

He was definately wrong for driving while intoxicated, especially since it was tequilla he was drinking. He was also wrong for the statements he made, but as the arresting officer also realized, it was just a drunk being a drunk. He seems to be truly remorseful for his comments.

The real question that his arrest arose in my cerebral cortex is, why is it the same media that is calling for everything short of his execution, at the same time defending the leader of Hezbollah, who has repeatedly and firmly stated that, his and his organizations(terrorist group), have the goal of killing all Jewish people.

Call me crazy, but I'd think I would be far less concerned with the drunk rantings of some guy simply blaming me for something, than I would be a group of people who actually declare that their goal in life is to kill me and everyone of my kind.

Mel was totally "out of order". If he wants to party, that's his business; however, driving drunk (and he KNEW he was drunk), making negative comments and the rest is a matter of a BAD CHOICE he made. Now he continues to "apologize". Well, an apology is fine, if you mean it from the HEART. None the less, no one on this planet has the right to "judge" another's race/religion/beliefs, as that job belongs ONLY to the creator....GOD!

Mel Gibson was great in the Mad Max series.
Other than that, I don't think of him, unless you are making a movie, why is he important to you or anyone else for that matter?

Mel, next time make a better movie.

Try the 1974 Jesus Film from the Jesus Project. Learn to copy and steal from a good film instead of copying from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was like Gothic Film Noir Jesus.

Driving Drunk was stupid but alcohol is stupid juice.
As for the remarks, hey, his last movie was one long beating of a Jew, punctuated with slaughtering him. What did you expect him to say?
I'm far more concerned that he's being slammed by people that never heard his words, only heresay. What's next? Thought police?

Gibson was definitely in the wrong for his actions, conduct, and comments. I don't think he deserves the publicity he is getting, but that I guess is the price of fame.
