Our Pomeranian is usally very quiet. The kennel we leave her at said she is the quietest Pom they have had.

So when someone besides my wife or I comes to the house, why does she bark aggressively? She barks and acts like she is ready to fight the person. I realize it may be a territorial thing, but it doesn't stop, and it becomes embarassing. She just stands near the person and barks constantly. It's like she can't adjust to new people. Any ideas or solutions?

She's letting you know that someone is invading your territory. You should acknowledge her, then tell her to be quiet.

To train her to be quiet, give her a visual cue that she can see when she's barking (such as putting your fingers to your lips) and tell her "good girl!" or give her a treat when she is being quiet. Use the command often when she quiets down. She will soon learn what the command means.

If she continues to bark when someone approaches the door, spray her with a water bottle and give her the new quiet command. If she still continues, a short time out away from the family is very effective. Put her in the next room or in the yard for a minute or two. (Remember, if she is crate trained, it's best not to use her crate as punishment.)

It sounds like a pretty bad problem that eventually could keep people from wanting to come over to your house. You have to either control her aggressive behavior or make sure that she is closed up in a bedroom when you will be having any company. Have you tried disciplining her when she starts her barking. A firm no and a swat with a newspaper might help. One person said a shock collar to send her a mild but attention getting shock which you control with a remote type of device. That might work well. I know that if each time I came over to your house and your dog barked at me aggressively that I wouldn't like coming over anymore. You really need to do something about ti. Maybe you could call a dog expert in your area and ask then what they think you should do.

ok so r u saying that ur dog aggressively barks when some one or something comes near her cage or kennel not like the barking trying to get out in a way. well does she show her teeth?
if she does then it is just a territorial thing all dogs in a way act like that when they met new people or other dogs.
dogs know that that is there territory and nothing can stand in there way
so take ur dog out more around other people and other dogs like to the park and a park only for dogs so ur dog just doesn't stay in one place and if she mets other dogs then she can find out that if ur dog messes with somebody elses territory, then she's find out the hard way.

to rap it all up just take ur dog to as many places u can

Your dog is being territorial. Bring in a behavior specialist. And next time, don't buy a purebred. There are enough mutts rotting in pounds, that it's shameful to own a purebred dog unless you got him from the pound.

Get the person to speak softly to her to see if she can adjust to the person. Maybe for a while, try to have more people stop by (close friends or family who will understand) to get her used to more people. Or, ask your vet or hire a dog trainer.

My dog does that to to make here quiet down just firmly take your hand where that lump on the neck is(part of neck on belly side)and press your palm against it and say "NO!" Or "QUIET!"
