its an off shoot of hinduism, so in order to understand it, you probably will have to understand hinduism a bit. but basically this is the idea. the concept of karma is that every action you take has a consequence. for each good action, you get good karma, for bad actions, you get good karma. the idea is to only collect good karma. when you die and get reincarnated, your new life form is based on your karma. i.e. if you have all good karma, youve reached your salvation, it you have mostly good karma, rich human, and then it goes down the list to poor human, animal and then micro-organisms.
the jainists are basically trying not to kill any living thing and put an end to their life cycle and mess up their karma punishment. and thats why there are very peaceful. and of course, some take it to more extremities than others.
as i said that is basically their idea, but it goes MUCH deeper than that.

Jainism is an offshoot of Hinduism, & was founded around the same time as Buddhism, by Mahavira.
Although Jainism does have deities(hence is polytheistic)its Ultimate Reality is the Eternal Soul.
It is divided into 2 sects(can't remember the names), & is very, very, respectful to nature, & Jains are vegetarians.

I think it's probably "sinful" for a Jainist to use the computer. I'm sure the internet kills bugs via raditation or something.
