I would suggest simple origami...but also if you look at www.orientaltading.com they have loads of craft ideas and maybe have some Japanese ones to choose from (like i know they at one point had the "take out" boxes that you can decorate).

Yeah, origami would probably be the project of choice here. It's easy to make and kids love making arts and crafts.

Origami is the easiest. Pick up some ideas on the Web. Paper mache is also easy. Starch and news paper on a frame, or balloon. Then paint and dry. Loads of fun.

Check out some simple Origami projects. Using colored origami papers makes it look very nice.

Ooh Draw some dragons or decorate pieces of paper their way and then fold them into fans!

Or make paper laterns and hang them around the room
