It's normal behavior for an ex stud dog. All he's having is mood swings, once you breed a stud dog...they naturally become more aggressive then they were before breeding. Just keep doing what you're doing...when he's mad, leave him alone and etc. good luck!

It sounds like the vet may need to check him out. He may be in pain or sick. You don't mention how old he is or the last time he went to the vet. If he is getting old, animals do have a tendency to get grumpy. Of course, keep children at a safe distance for everyone's sake.

Just like with people, if you notice a sudden personality change in your dog it's a good idea to take hiim to the vet.

He could be having vision or hearing problems that are aggrevating him or he could be sick.

Or it's nothing and he's just being cranky - but it's better to be safe than sorry. Especially if he's sick.

It may just be a phase that he's going thru, but a trip to the vet for a check up is probably the best idea. I know going down to the office is sometimes costly, but at least you'll have peace of mind.

Take him to your vet for an exam. Your dog may have some medical condition which is causing him pain. As an animal, he lacks the rationality to deal with the pain or to let you know the specificity of it. He only growls, whimpers, or barks, because that is all he does know to do.

Watch to see if he scratches one particular area, chews at an area, or tries to chew household items (not his toys). Scratching or chewing might give you an indication of where he may have a problem. If he starts chewing unusual items (furniture, wood, etc), then he may have a toothache.

He could have some internal problems, like tumors or arthritis, if you were in pain then you wouldn't want anyone to bother you either!
Is he neutered? Neutered males are less aggressive than non-neutered one, however you said he was an ex stud dog so it may be too late to neuter him and have that effect.
Talk to your vet or a trainer.

The first thing I would do is take him to the vet because a personality change could indicate he's not feeling well... If there's nothing wrong with him physically it sounds as if he's defending his bed area...maybe something happened to trigger this behavior?

Jack Russells can be snotty. I would want to make sure he doesn't have a pain or helath issues that is bothering him.

Maybe he was used to getting laid and is having withdrawals.
funny answers aside...
He doesn't sound happy and that is probably something a vet should look at... It's quite possible that he has something wrong with him internally. Unfortunately dogs can't tell you when there is something wrong.

Step #1 - take your dog to a vet and have him checked out physically.

Step #2 - Watch "The Dog Whisperer" on National Geographic
